Hello to all! First time posting but long time follower. Finally purchased a 100 series (2006 LX470) in Fall after many years of interest and planning. Great base and looking forward to building a overland toy. Going through making small repairs to get back to a solid foundation.

One of the first things I have noticed is I need to replace the steering rack. One side seal is leaking and squeezes fluid out of the boot at full steering lock. I have researched a ton, searched the forums, and tried to make sense of exactly what part needs to be ordered. The issue seems to be the 2006 with VGRS compatibility. I have a friend who has a great auto service company and is going to be doing the work as the dealership offered a $2500 price tag and no way I am going that route. I am ordering parts for my friend to install as he can only get aftermarket parts. Consensus is an OEM part is the ideal solution for steering racks and heard DO NOT do aftermarket. Problem is I am having major issues finding the OEM part that fits this 2006 LX470. Conflicting information from dealership and online does not offer much help, so here is where I am.

44200-60120 is the actual LEXUS OEM part # that is supposed to work with 2006 model due to VGRS and it includes tie rod ends. It is unavailable from everywhere I can find including dealerships. Looks to be totally discontinued.

44250-60120 is the new superseded part # now for the 2006 (does NOT include tie rod ends). After digging deeper it shows to not "work" with the 2006 VGRS vehicle. Dealership agrees with this.

I have read a ton about the steering rack replacements on this forum and many mention VGRS is a separate part and is not included in any steering rack part replacement. I also read that Toyota replacement works great with possibly a slightly different turning ratio which sounds like no big deal.

Below are my questions:
1. Can someone help me with the accurate information on the Lexus OEM part # that fits a 2006 LX470 now and works with the VGRS? Also where is best place to order as OEM seems hard to find now.
2. Can someone help me with the part number for the Toyota OEM steering rack part # that also works with the 2006 LX470 with VGRS? Where is best place to order as well.
3. Any other parts that should be replaced when doing the steering rack job? Some recommend pressure tubes
4. I want to keep VGRS and don't want the light on on the dash. Any issues with installing any non-2006 part number with the VGRS?
5. Any issue with installing the Toyota OEM rack with the VGRS? Thinking Lexus has VGRS and Toyota does not.

Thanks in advance for the help from a new guy!

44250-60100 is the correct part (Toyota, not Lexus, the latter of which you should avoid when buying parts). Both part numbers you provided are discontinued...

Hi, welcome to the forum!

I have a 2006 LX470 and replaced the rack myself last summer.

I bought all my parts from lexuspartsnow.com except for the first two parts. Below are part numbers from Lexuspartsnow site. You don't need the castle nuts for the tie rod bc the new tie rod comes with it. Best thing to do is to enter your VIN on partsouq to ensure correct part numbers. Everything worked great. I took it to the Lexus dealer for alignment, and they reset the VGRS light.

Interestingly, I went back to lexuspartsnow and entered in the rack number, but it says not compatible with my VIN; it works fine though.

Good luck!

$300 markup for the “Lexus version” 🤣🤣🤣

I think it's "brighter" and also has a different smell to it ;P

but yeah many have put the Toyota part into their LX without problem

Used the LC version on my LX, works just fine. Maybe you get a jar of Grey Poupon with the Lexus one....IDK.

Ouch, no love from the forums tonight.

Honestly I don’t go out of my way to point out how people should spend their money. It’s clear they can choose what they want to do. Nice job!

I believe the difference is a modified steering ratio within the rack to accommodate the VGRS system in the LX.

The later year LX came standard with VGRS (variable steering ratios). I don't think the LC had it standard, but maybe as an option.

Price difference might be related to vast differences in manufactured quantities. There are a lot more LCs without VGRS in the wild globally than there are LX470s, I think.

If I were buying a new rack, I'd spend an extra $300 to have the "right" rack. 🤷 It's a drop in the bucket of modified 100 ownership...

Variable gear steering was standard on LCs beginning in 2003.

Seems like just a simple “Lexus” markup to me. Even a Lexus tie rod end costs $10 more than the exact same Toyota part. You’re just paying extra to buy stuff from Lexus, even though it probably has Toyoda stamped on it...

Are there other examples like that? Same part, different model numbers? I've only run into different part numbers when the two parts are actually different. IE interior parts, suspension bits, etc...

That price is pretty amazing; I bought a rack from Hendrick Lexus in Charlotte last summer (they give me the good guy discount), for my 2000 LX470, for $450.

Noticed a leak yesterday from my drivers side boot, and by leak I mean it's spraying all over the place. Just ordered the Lexus rack from here: Genuine Lexus Parts | Bell Lexus North Scottsdale - https://parts.belllexusnorthscottsdale.com/. Great price and free shipping. Will just need to limp along with filling up my reservoir until the part comes in. My indy gave the green light to put it in for me, ballpark $450 including misc. shop supplies, labor, and alignment, which sounds like a better option for where I'm at in life (namely 4 kids, 7 and under).

Bell Lexus was kind enough to confirm the 44250-60120 part number was correct for my VIN over the phone prior to me placing the order. They also have free shipping over $75. The only down side is I'm on the east coast and they are located in Phoenix so I might not get it this week.

Appreciate all of the great information that's been shared on this topic.

edit: added a pic of the leaking side. Seems a bit worse than I thought.

Hiya Wilcox.

I saw your thread and I'm having the same issue.

What's your Update, I'm looking at the same issues and wanted to see if the Toyota part will work or should I spend more to get the LX.

I have a local shop said they will install for $460 but wanted to ask if you did the install yourself and how big of a challenge it was for you.

Hope it all worked out!

Hey flint, this part^ will be fine for a 2006 LX470?
Im facing the same issue as Wilcox(OP).
Wondering what's the solution 😁

In January of 2021 I ordered the following part from Bell Lexus in AZ and had a local indy put it in:

P/N
Quantity
Price Each
Description
4425060120
1
$ 955.66
GEAR ASSEMBLY, POWER STEERING(FOR RACK & PINION)

2.5 years later I had my local Toyota dealer do an alignment when getting new tires and they found the rack was not exactly centered when installed but otherwise is working fine in my 2006 LX470.

I hope that helps.

NO

Your 2006 uses a rack with different mounting points
