Hello all,

First time poster here.

Im considering purchasing a LC from a local guy who is has come off as very honest. Before I will even look at it, he said that after it sat for a couple weeks (used to daily the vehicle), a CEL came on. Codes suggested its a knock sensor with no previous issues. The vehicle will throw CEL after 40ish miles of driving and will not engage overdrive. (specifically throws CEL, steering stabilizing, and one other on the dash) No unordinary sounds or driving restraints.

The vehicle has meticulous maintenance records and recently got an entire new AC system. He said his retired Toyota mech (neighbor) said if it persists, it may need a replacement for the knock sensor, which would cost roughly $1500.

Any ideas what I need to be on the look out for here? Im not incredibly knowledgeable mechanically.

If this may be a bigger issue? what should I look out for? listen for? feel for in a test drive?

Thanks!

Best course of action is to bring an OBD scanner and pull the codes before you hand over your money. This will give you an idea what to expect in terms of repair - look up the error code in google. This will also serve as negotiating tool with the seller.

A truck with that kind of miles will tend to need a ton of work as time goes on, as every part will reach end-of-life. Knock sensors are $156 each (discounted price) and $1500 sounds like a typical shop price to change them.

A 375K miles, this truck will need (or should have had) a steering rack, ball joints, AC service, radiators, a brake motor/actuator ($1100 part+ labor). Unless you can see major work and replacements throughout the life of this truck, I would avoid it (since you're not a veteran wrench). My LX has 332K on it, and has had all these things (and much more). I got it for a fair price, and I do all my own work, but I would never recommend such a high miles truck to anyone who wasn't a total DIY type.

What other trucks around there can you find with half the miles, even if they cost a lot more?
