Fish- I have a set of the Discoverer S/T on my 2500HD. Love em. I'm probably going to add them to my 100 in a few weeks but I have been checking to see what else is out there. The tread depth is nice and I have had no problems with them. I am in Pgh, PA and drive to Syracuse about 1x per month for business. The Discoverer S/T's have gotten me through some nasty lake effect snow, they ride nice and are not too loud on the highway. I have a boat launch at my camp which is mud and river rock and on a pretty good incline. I have not had any issues yet. I was thinking of going to 285/65/18 on the 100 with the S/T's. I only got my '06 100 on Fri. So I have a lot of work to do on it.

FWIW... I'm probably going to do the 285/65/18 BFG T/As. I loved 'em on my 80-series and while I don't know if the size upgrade from stock 275/60/18 Duelers (which suck) is necessary, I'll feel a lot better knowing that they're built well.

One note: I called Costco; they apparently sell BFG. They quoted me a price but said that they wouldn't likely install them because "that vehicle requires an H-rated tire". Something about liability... I was pretty surprised. The tire quoted looked better suited for an X5 (Michelin Latitude).

Just out of curiousity - anyone have pics of their 100-series with stock suspension and the BFG 285/65/18s? My only point of reference is my 80-series with 285/75/16s (worn) with OME suspension kit.

Thanks! - JBro

My Tire guy tells me the AT's are quite noisy. Is my better half going to have a fit with the new ride

Who cares! Why do so many guys let their women decide what tires and lift etc they put on their off road vehicle? Let her walk if she don't like it. Show her my post too!

I got the BFG KO's 50k miles ago and so far has been the best tire! I noticed very little noise difference, and handling improved with the E load rated tires. You can fill the side wall stiffness and I'm sure that is why the tire ware has been greater than expected. I may have another 20k left on them!!!

I have read that 285/65/18 (32.7") fit with no problem but have anybody tried LT305/65R18/E (33.7")? Would the width be a problem?

Nittos are nice but wear out very quick. BFGs from experice are nice, louder, last for EVER, pretty darn good off road, but for mild off roading, wife driver , quiet, awesome on slick roads...you can't beat the Michelin A/T MS...

Ryan818...

I'm going with the Cooper Discoverer ST's next in 275/70/18 - 33" E rated. I think they are the most aggressive AT tire out there. They will produce the same noise as most AT's when new, but WILL get louder than most when they wear. I've heard the noise picks up a bit, but for the added traction of this AT I think it's worth it. They are supposed to be great in mud (for an AT) rock, sand etc - also quite good in snow, especially if siped which I'm going to do. They're also not to expensive - about $215 per tire.

I have Revo's know and like them except they are a tad mellow for me - and the tread depth on the Revo 275/65/18's is only 11/32" - versus the Cooper's which is 18/32" - BIG difference...

Fish

Fish, how many miles have you gotten out of your Revo 275/65/18s. I am considering those along with the NTGs in 285/60/18 and Michelin AT2s in 275/65/18. Only complaint I have heard about the Revos are longevity. Is the handling as good since you went up in profile size? Really struggling on which of these tires to go with. Have gotten 41K out of my stock Bridgestone Duelers and do a lot of highway driving, so mileage is important, but I would like a more aggressive looking tire with some off-road attributes when I do go off-road.

flyfish4life - I am at about 23K now and they are wearing pretty darn good. I actually wish they were NOT wearing well so I could get a new set of the S/T's sooner!

On that note, do you want to buy mine as used (for a small fee)and "try" them? :grinpimp: They have plenty of tread (probably about 50%) that way you can give them a run - if you like them they will be good for a year, maybe more. If not, they can be tossed with little loss in money..? Anyway, just a thought - not sure where you're located so shipping might not make it a worthy idea. If you want to talk about it PM me.

As for overal performance - dry road, wet, snow - all wonderful. Gravel roads, light/loose dirt, sand bars, gravel stream banks etc - pretty good, but I don't push them much unless I need to. Mud - just ok (been stuck once). Never had them crawling bigger rocks so don't know.

We need to talk fly fishing as well...

Live in Knoxville, TN, so shipping will likely make that good idea prohibitive. I am out near your way (SW Montana) about every year. Love that area (esp. Ennis area and Madison River) and hope to retire there in about 20 years.

Thanks for the offer and the input. My major concerns were handling both dry, wet and then off-road attributes, which appear to be a go with this tire. Did you ever consider 285/60/18 size (NTG offers this size - about 31.3") - just wondered if one size offered any better performance than the other. I know the 275/65s will have a higher profile (32.1" roughly), which is better off pavement, but wasn't sure if on-pavement would be negatively affected if any.

Hey FF4L - I wanted to fill out the wheel well more, so when larger - and I still want bigger!! The only very very very minor effect I saw was that with the larger tire you loose just tad of the gear ratio - but barely anything...

Guys

Dunlops are giving out after 20 000 miles. Better half is in panic mode on driving with worn tires and rain is coming so I need to swop them out

Costco just quoted me $800 for 4 BFG's (285/75/16). Does this seem a fair price. Most on the Forum seem to like the BFG's and I like dealing with Costco. Should I go for D or E rating. I'm tending towards E but am open to suggestions

I might take a run past my local tire guy and see what he can do Nitto's or Toyos for but ultimately it seems you cant really go wrong with any of these.

800 for 4 285's sound very good. is that with new valve stems and alignment? i remember i was qouted 1056 for the 285's and slightly more for the 295's. Tires are wicked expensive in Atlanta.

Said it was all in excluding tax. Gotta try get past their rules though. They may end up not doing it.

One further question. I am 99% sure that I am going to swap out my 18 inch rims for 16 inch rims. I have 4 already in my attic. Any reason to stay with the 18's other than for looks

Go for the D rated tire as it has the severe snow rating, the E does not, probably due to a harder compound (read less traction). Also, the D will ride a bit better and has more than adequate load capacity for your vehicle.

There are a couple reasons they haven't changed the tread design. People like their performance and still buy them.

C'mon, surely you can find something better then the BF A/T??? The tread design and composite of this tyre hasn't changed in over 20 odd years. Do your cruiser justice and find something that really works.

Try Goodyear Silent Armor

I had a set of Silent Armor 305/70-16 on my 95 Land Cruiser (sold several weeks ago). After 40k miles, they still looked new. I never felt they were too noisy.

I am rethinking my tire replacement from 285/75/16's and thinking of going with 265/65/18. Here is where I see the Pros and Cons

Pro's

1) closer to my OEM tire. This will make using one old OEM tire as a spare a little more palatable
2) Will fit on my 18 rims. I then don't have to deal with a different spare rim size. Ultimately will then have all 5 tires the same
3) Less risk of rubbing with AHC

Cons

1) uses 18 inch rims. Less flex in sand conditions
2) Smaller footprint may impair highway driving
3) Smaller available range

For those guys out there with 265's can you give some feedback and any more Pros and Cons

Sounds like a 285/60/18 is your tire size. I may be wrong but isn't a wider tire better for sand? I know it's better for highway.
