First, let me start with: Yes, I searched. Yes, I read my owner's manual.

My 2004 is set up to lock the doors when you put it in drive, but it doesn't automatically unlock when put into park. In the owner's manual, there are programming options for this feature to change if/when it locks/unlocks on it's own.

I have tried at least 20 times, following the procedure EXACTLY, and cannot get it to acknowledge the programming steps.

Has anyone else had issues getting the auto lock/unlock to change status? Any pointers?

I've tried the steps too and have the same problem you do. Doors auto-lock but do not auto-unlock on mine. I get frustrated after trying the steps I found here somewhere and give up.

I wonder if this is one of the things you have to use the dealership for like getting a new master key programmed.

Hmm... I had the same issue with my ES when I got it, the doors wouldn't auto-unlock. It took a few tries, but eventually I got the setting changed. Ya that would bug the hell out of me.

I have an '04 and had the same issue, you have to take it to the dealership and have it done. I live in Austin, TX. and it was $25 or $30 at Charles Maund Toyota. Now they lock when I put it in drive and all unlock when I put it in park. They can configure it almost any way you want, they told me they come preset like that from the dealership for safety purposes.

What year did this feature get added? My 2001 will re-lock the doors if I let it sit too long without opening a door after using the remote to unlock them.

I have 2004 Japanese UZJ100 and tried to reprogram using the series of steps, carefully timed, but had no success. Mine is set to never autolock or unlock.

Good to know that at least a dealer can reprogram this. It's very frustrating.

I have a 2004 and followed some directions I found online and it worked perfectly. However that was 2 years ago and heck if I can remember what the directions are...

What are the step? I kind of want to give it a try.

Copy/Paste from another 'MUD thread. I'll check my '04 Manual when I get home to see if it's the same. This is for a 2006.

—Automatic door locking and
unlocking functions
You can select the following modes of the automatic locking and unlocking functions. The initial mode is mode 1.

Mode 1—Automatic locking operation linked to shift lever position
All doors are automatically locked when the shift lever is moved out of “P” position after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position and all the doors are closed.

Mode 2—Automatic locking operation linked to vehicle speed
All doors are automatically locked when the vehicle speed goes above about 20 km/h (12 mph).

Mode 3—Automatic unlocking operation linked to the ignition switch All doors are automatically unlocked when the driver’s door is opened within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position, or the key is removed.

Mode 4—Automatic unlocking operation linked to shift lever position All doors are automatically unlocked when the selector lever is moved to “P” position after the ignition switch is
turned to “ON” position.

SETTING FUNCTIONS
You can set the following functions by yourself. To set the mode 1 (the automatic locking operation linked to shift lever position):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever into the “P” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the front side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

To set the mode 2 (the automatic locking operation linked to vehicle speed):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever from the “P” into the “N” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the front side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

To set the mode 3 (the automatic unlocking operation linked to the ignition switch):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever into the “P” into the “N” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the rear side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

To set the mode 4 (the automatic un-locking operation linked to shift lever position):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever into the “P” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the rear side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

Mine is currently set for Mode 1. I would like to have it set to Mode 4. I have tried any/all modes, and NONE work...

Did you try to do the sequence faster? On some models it has a total time (like it has to be completed within 20 seconds, or whatever) and usually it has a per step limit. Like each step has to be completed within 3 seconds. In my personal experience it has been faster is better. Alternatively, you can take it to a dealer and they can adjust the customization parameters with a scan tool.

Just FYI it does show that the default is OFF.

When I bought the 2005 LX, I just stopped by a dealership quickly and had them adjust some settings. They plugged their TIS Techstream ToughBook into the OBDII port and let me pick what I wanted down the list. Took longer for me to decide what I wanted to change than anything else.

Those look like the steps I used on my 2004 to set the doors to unlock when in Park.

I don't understand Step 2 of the following. Isn't the selector lever already in the "P" position?
Then in Step 3, I understand it is saying to hold the switch in the "unlock" position for about 5 seconds.

Clarification please from those that have made this work.

TIA

To set the mode 4 (the automatic un-locking operation linked to shift lever position):
1. Set the parking brake, close all doors and turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position.
2. Shift the selector lever into the “P” position.
3. Press the driver’s side power door lock switch on the rear side for about 5 seconds, within 10 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.
4. The doors will be locked and unlocked to indicate that the function is set. To cancel the function, do the above operation again.

Your timing has to b spot on. When it says "5 seconds" you have to be EXACT. Took me a few tries when I first did it. Very frustrating!

I am amazed to see so many people having trouble with this. The second day I owned my 2004, I decided there had to be a way to make things unlock when I put her in park. I had my passenger pull out the owners manual before we left my driveway one day and had him read me the steps. I followed them as he read them. Worked on the first try and life has been better ever since. Follow the manual. It works.

I double checked my 2003 TLC Owner's Manual, and it says the auto lock mode can be changed............please see your dealership for assistance.

Evidently the manual changed in 2004? Are the instructions any different than above?

TIA

Update: I finally made this work. I turned on the ignition, waited only 3 seconds and held "unlock" for exactly 5 seconds, and the unlock mode when returning to "Park" was set. Hopefully, it stays set.
