I just installed my 55w 4500k kit this weekend. It is very awesome. I need to get a good shot on a wall to check alignment and see the cut off. The driver's side seems to scatter some light around.

My ballasts are kinda ghetto rigged in there right now. I have a bunch of the 3m emblem glue left, anyone think it would be a bad idea to use that to secure my ballasts? Seems plenty strong and wouldn't transfer vibrations like being solidly bolted.

I did both... to control vibration, but more importantly, secure them somehow, because I think the tape will fail. Do it once and do it right :) This is one of the best mod's... should have come from Lexus with HID's :crybaby:

Did mine a while ago and did the ghetto install, still working after some solid testing.:hillbilly:

So what's the consensus on using the emblem glue?

I bought the brackets and use double sided tape to secure the balast into them. I mounted the brackets onto the 10mm fender bolts on each side and then bent the bracket down and zip tied the bottoms to secure them and added the extra relay. Super solid.

I am running 5000k bulbs with these balasts and did an '06 retrofit on the grill/lights etc. (they even have a decent cutoff) They have worked great, even through some agressive driving on rough roads.

From what I have read, the 55 is more popular because it casts more light (20watts - not sure what this equates to in lumens) and is recommended to use the relay. The 35s are plug and play, in that they do not require the higher rated relay. So, if you have ordered the 35 watt units, you probably can use them as a direct replacement without adding the relay, but the relay is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does add complication (an additional relay) to the circuit.

Hope this helps LJ,

Jonathan

The upside to the relay is that it protects the factory wiring from any crazy loads that "could" be cause by a malfunction.

Old thread but, is the 55w more popular than the 35w? I ordered up the 35w kit with a relay...just to be on the safe side, not sure if I need the relay for the 35w kit though
I needed the relay kit with my 35W

Always a good idea to use a relay. Remember ballast pull a lot of power until they warm up.

Any aftermarket addition (especially one on the "cheap" side like most of these kits) should have a relay to protect the stock system. It's $15 for a piece of mind if anything.

On the way back from huntsville last night I saw a hundy on 431 with a hid kit, the glare was pretty bad. Have any of you actually tested this? It may have been because I was in my sti(which is pretty low) but it seemed on par with the local ricey civics.

okay, using zip ties to secure my ballast was not smart, what are you guys doing to mount the ballast? It always rattles and I feel like its going to fall off. A specific mounting system would be nice so I can just bolt it in somewhere in the engine bay

Look on ebay. There is a link I posted earlier in this thread to the ones I purchased. I mounted them behind the side markers in the finder well.
