Playing around in my dad's 2013 200 series in hard packed snow. Not an expert on these trucks, I have a 100. Turning on crawl, in various terrain settings, it pretty much freaked out and sounded like it was ripping up mechanical parts. What gives? My dad told me he also tried the crawl in snow and experienced the same grinding/lurching unpleasantness. Searched here and didn't find a thread on this, but apologies if this has already been discussed.

The noise you are hearing is the ABS system firing rapidly and independently to stop wheel spin and thus to apply torque to wheels with traction (diffs are open). You will find it will work more smoothly and certainly less noisily when there is a bit of resistance to work against, - like deep snow, sand or a slight incline. Icy flat surfaces can seem a little disconcerting to the novice but fear not, its operating exactly as it is designed to do.

Ouch, Billfish, that was a bit rough.

The explanation, however, was correct. Nothing is going to get ripped up, but it does sound pretty aweful. Maybe in future variations they will find a way to modulate the brakes more gradually so that there is less of a "slam" when the ABS is firing.

I suppose you are right Mark. Was only kidding him of course. Couldn't seem to help myself.

Bummer, that was kinda funny!

Even the 100 series had some funky beeping and flashing dash lights when the ATRAC/VSC was working. Tends to scare you a bit. That however was a warning sound, not mechanical noise.
