go on believing that statement... please'

but at the same time make sure you are saving up your pennies for a tow bill, a hefty repair bill and usually a few nights stay in a motel while a shop that never even seen this truck or engine stumbles through the repair cursing it every step of the way.

Hopefully you noticed the words " may, probably, relatively, and however" in my reply which should of indicated my reluctance to stick my neck out to far. I have owned a number of vintage British Land Rovers so the term reliability is often in the eyes of the beholder and based on past experience. Talking about the 2L-TE on the forum is like shooting a wasp nest with a water hose ( it creates an instant and often stinging reaction) among readers.

hummm, i need to be a bit more ...tackful... in my responses.

mine was a word of caution, yours was a word of hope.

I find it odd that the motor asked about is not the motor being talked about, though they are quite similar, my understanding is the 2LT and 2LTE have their own unique problems. I am under the understanding (perhaps wrongly) that the 2LTE aside from being electronically controlled also has a higher compression ratio and a different head? While it does make more power, I would wonder if that is not always a good thing? Im new to owning a baby cruiser, and for the price I couldnt turn it up, however even with that in mind I would prefer a BJ or HJ, though they are turning out to be suprisingly difficult to find in Germany. just my .02 Euro Cents.

Now "Crushers" do not get all soft on us. Your tendency to be less than "tactful" is what makes us look forward to your opinions on the forum. If it hurts someones feelings including mine than they are taking this forum to seriously. I must admit that I never noticed 2LT as the original subject of the Thread. I am a little pre-wired to see only "2L-TE" since it is such a passionate subject on the forum. ......Take care.............1978HJ45

I am definately a fan of the 2L. I don't have any first hand experience with the turbo variants, but I'm very happy with my NA engine. It's no rocket ship, but it performs well enough, and can sit on the speed limit most of the time.

I like the engine so much in fact, that I am considering getting a Toyota Crown, Corona, or Cressida and swapping in a 2L and manual gearbox.

My friends have 3L and 5L Hiluxs, and mine easily pulls away from both of them, despite mine running 33s and a 4 speed gearbox, and theirs running 30s and 5 speeds.

Mine will do 120km/h on the GPS at 4000 rpm, but the governor is starting to cut in. With a 5 speed gearbox, I could probably get 125-130km/h out of it.

now don't be getting your panties in a knot

nah, i am not a fan but i also have driven a few and if you can do 4000 rpm with a naturally asperated 2L on 33s at 120 k/h ... well ... i am amazed, blown away, ... you have a very rare engine.
most are struggling to keep 3000 rpm and 3500 is a blessing.

just say'n...

Everyone has to admit that having the words "diesel and speed" in the same sentence when discussing Land Cruisers makes for a unique thread no matter what side of the fence you are on. The fact that I can even obtain a descent road speed in my diesel Cruisers on a given day makes me smile.

Hello,

I understand most, if not all, 2L-powered Cruisers brought into Canada were used JDM units. Someone pointed out that these engines spent a lot of time idling while on heavy traffic with less-than-caring owners at the wheel.

Needless to say, it is also a small engine fitted into a rather big, heavy, vehicle. On the other hand, diesels are usually not designed with speed in mind.

We all know what abuse can do to any engine. Some engines will survive, others will not.

Dumb question: is this engine judged only by the way it performs in used JDM Cruisers?

No flames intended.

I'll make an acceleration video when I am finished putting the rear end together (just waiting on brake adjusters and universal joint now).

Until then, here is a video of my Hilux:

I know this has nothing to do with the 2L topic and sorry.....but I had to post this picture for comic relief -

This is what some people dont understand. The L variety are completely at home trundling along at 70-80kph or in low gear at lesser speeds.
They are just not suited to long distance high speed cruising.
The Hilux diesels are used as surface vehicles in some of the most remote mines in australia.
With large fleets, they know what works and what dont.
