Well, I've been trying to track down an intermittent starting problem:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=56980

The solution was to get a used but good starter, disassemble, clean and check, and reassemble and use in the truck while I rebuild the not-so-good but only 2 year old remanufactured.

Figured since I was gonna get a starter, may as well get the big-un, the 2.2Kw (28100-66050) from a ~93 right? If some is good, more is better and too much is just enough! So I called the boys at cruiserparts.net and told them exactly what I was looking for. They sent one out right away (BTW: another plug for those guys, great!). It arrived, definately used, but working.

I had some contacts in pretty good shape from my 2.0Kw, but they are NOT interchangable with the 2.2Kw, the offset is different. The plunger top is also different, however it may be interchangable. I wouldn't bet on it unless I had some verification though! A little time, some brake parts cleaner, and some heat-shrink and new connections and we were in business.

Unfortunately, the digi-cam was with the wife so I couldn't snap comparo shots between the 2.0Kw I had in the truck and the new-used 2.2Kw I put in. However, I can tell you there is a definate size difference in the 2.2Kw and the old 2.0Kw, with the 2.2Kw being larger, and a little more tricky to guide up into it's home. Also interesting is that the 2.0kw has a sleeve that the pinion gear retracts into, the 2.2Kw does not. Wiring connections are identical between the two. The 2.0Kw starter motor is held together with 2 long bolts passing OUTSIDE of the motor case, accessible from the BACK of the starter (the front of the truck) while the 2.2Kw starter motor is held together with 2 bolts passing INSIDE the motor case which are accessible from the FRONT of the starter (the rear of the truck). Basically, with the 2.0Kw starter installed, you can hypothetically remove and replace the MOTOR without replacing the whole starter. This is not possible with the 2.2Kw starter.

The proof is in the pudding as they say so here's the real deal. This starter spins this motor MUCH faster than the 2.0Kw starter did (the 2.0Kw starter motor was in great shape, there is a problem with the solenoid). MUCH faster! And it fires up sooner as a result. These cruisers always seem to take a few cranks to catch but with this thing it's turning so quick it just starts. As I do a number of cold-weather trips I'll be interested to see how quick it cranks a motor with super-thick/cold oil.

So there's a lot of marginally useful information on 2.2Kw and 2.0Kw starters. And sorry, I know

how much was the starter?

I gave up on my old starters immediatly as I discovered a shop that had a brand new starter for my model.

I have no starter problems now, but the new starter cost me U.S. $ 500.00 more or less.

Cost me $100, about $180 less than I paid for the remanufactured unit that lasted 2.5 years...

We'll see how long this one lasts!

Great score on that starter. Yes indeed the contacts and punger are different. I believe the 28100-66050 2.2kw starter to be the very best one. As they were only used in the 1993 model year and they fail very rarely you are indeed lucky to have found one. Mine is 13 years old and has 133,000 miles on it and is un-touched. I have contacts and a plunger on the bench for when it finally shoots craps. I think that I am still a long ways away from replacement. I can not recall ever selling a reman to a 1993 model 80. I have been watching for several years for such an event. My intention is to snag the core and go through it.

CD:

Is it possible to buy one of these for a 1994 80?

And how much

No, not new anyway or reman for that matter. That particular starter was used in 93 only and was superceeded by the 2.0 28100-66060.

2.0 and 2.2 front and side pics. FWIW, I have a mean green on mine now and it is the size of the 2.0.

Nice pics! Custom breathers on the 2.0Kw?

tiorio - maybe these pics from a different angle will help you. 28100-66050 2.2kw and 28100-66060 2.0kw.
Yes, custom breathers.
FWIW, the 2.2kw starter has a 9 tooth starter drive or bendix on it; and the 2.0kw has a 10 tooth. This would give the 2.2kw more power to spin the motor to start albeit a little slower. I guess the teeth still mesh ok with the ring gear even with the different count.

As a side note, this piece of information would seem to finally settle the "which is the best year 80" argument-- it clearly is a 93. FJZ engine, lockers, bus transmission and now the super-duper starter.

The best year 80 is the 80 you have. Don't feel inferior because you have a 93. Heck the 91's and 92's are awesome and cheap (even if slo..). The A/C conversion issue would push me toward a '94 at least. Remember Cruiserdan has had all kinds of problems with his 80 and I think it's a 93. :D By 97 or so, they had all the bugs out and started over. :grinpimp: I think they are close to having the 100s sorted out now. Time for a new model.
