this is some great info. after reading this i wonder if my truck has ever been full of oil or if I'm just driving myself crazy for nothing. I think i will drain all the oil out tomorrow and start from scratch

Thanks Again this stuff has been a live safer since i got my truck a couple weeks ago.

trekker,

Be careful not to over-think the amount of oil to add to a fresh oil change. On your 1993, the dryfill capacity is 8.5 US qts. This is what you would add after tearing down the engine or what Toyota added at the factory for the first fill.

According to the Owner's Manual, the amount needed for "oil change with filter replacement" is 7.8 quarts.

Drain oil and replace filter. Add 2 gallons. Drive around. Check the dip stick the next morning, before first start. Whatever level you see is the cold Full level (technically, full + 0.2 quarts).

The FZJ80 is meant to be checked when warm, a few min after shut down. I usually check mine at the end of a fuel stop. Someone wrote this, quote is from the owners manual:

"With the engine at operating temperature and turned off, check the oil on the dipstick." is a quote right out of the manual. For clarification the first step says: "To get a true reading, the vehicle should be on a level spot. After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine."

I think when i drain it i will add the two gallons then run it a few minutes and then shut it down as you guys recommend then check it. i hope with the oil info i have gathered here i can curve my oil cunsumption issues. my 1985 4runner has 200000 miles on the original bottom end and only uses 1/2 a qt in 3000 and that running it down the freeway and rock crawling with 35's an auto tranny and a spool in the rear and my 1994 pick up with the POS 3.0 uses less then a 1/2 quart in 3000 and it has 186000 miles and has never been touched other then regular Mant.

trekker,

You mentioned that you plan to drain and refill in order to 'start from scratch.' If you had a recent oil change and therefore plan to keep the existing filter, keep in mind that the Toyota filter holds about 0.5 US quarts when the engine is off, and a filter like the PureONE PL30001 may hold a little more than that. To truly confirm an accurate reading of where full appears on your dip stick, change the filter as well.

Check the oil level the standard way with engine at operating temp, a few minutes after turning it off. This will be your true full level on the dipstick that you want to see after re-fueling at gas stations, etc. Normally this is indeed right at the Full mark on the dipstick.

Also check it the way I suggested. This will be the full level when the engine is cold, before the first start in the morning. This level will be higher than the standard method, probably above the Full mark on the dipstick, and establishes a Cold reference for you should you wish to check it before leaving for work or whatever, a conventient time to add oil.

The distance from the Low to the Full mark on the dipstick is 1.7 US quarts.
