I'm looking at several different 80 series diesels right now
among them are two NA (1hz) trucks and one turbo (I assume 1hdt)

all are 5 speed
all have PTO winch (factory)
non have lockers that I can tell
all are part-time 4wd

so, here's the question how much more money is a 1hdt worth vs. a 1hz?

I've got a 93 hz with about 130K km on the clock at about 17K US dollars
or 93 hdt with 335K km (that's about 200,000 miles) for about 19K us dollars.

both prices are asking. I assume I bargain them down. Not sure how far.
There may also be a 95 1hz that I can grab for less, maybe as little as 15K. But not sure yet if that is the case.

My first thought is to buy the 95, if it really exists, and put on a turbo. How hard is that? Anyone have pics/links/threads with hz-t? I'm off to search now, but wanted some comparison thoughts from everyone. FWIW: I can buy a toyota turbo here pretty easily from a junked Dyna truck or Coaster that was running a 12ht, which is similarly sized..... or a mitsubishi... or even a hyundai, but those motors are much smaller.

Any info is much appreciated!

Thanks!
Steve

ps: any reason to prefer a 93 over a 95?

Dude ... comparing prices, for sure the 95 .. ! how much km it have . ?

I thought in Costa Rica ( that have a lots of good mechaics with good engine turbo skills ) it's so easy improve a turbo setup for this 1HZ engine .. in most of cases you are buying a newer engine and rig ( compared to 1HD-T cruiser ) with the turbo posibility .. with an aftermaket turbo .. when you can afford it.

So important are the overall status of the cruiser .. not only the engine .. interior seats ..

When I see and second hand truck .. I can say it have a "owner" or not .. in all details ..

well, I haven't seen the trucks yet- this is all on the phone... asi que veremos.

The 95.... a friend of a friend. He is supposed to call me. I'm waiting.

give me an email and i will set you up with a HDT with much less km for that kind of money. 330K for $19,000 US?!? ouch.

can you get a LHD imported to Costa Rica (taxes paid) for much less?
There's the rub.

RHD is, in a word, illegal here. Period. You can get a temporary permit if you are passing through, but no dice on importation. Import taxes are dear- for a 10 year old vehicle it works out to about 40% of the "book value". Nobody seems to know exactly what book, but if you have a receipt of purchase, they'll usually accept that.

I'm sure I could head to Panama and get a better deal, but then I'd still have the import issue.

That's the bad news. The good news is that once you get a good deal once on a rig down here, flipping upward isn't so very expensive. I'll be selling my hj60 for about 10-12K and buying a newer 80 for under 20K. All in all, it'll cost me about 6-8K for the upgrade, which is probably worthwhile for me.

As it all turns out, I think I've found a 93 hzj80 for about 15K. Looking at it tomorrow. No idea of mileage yet, but the current driver is a young woman who got the rig from her dad a couple of years ago. He is a businessman. Not sure if he wheeled the snot out of it or not, but at least she has had it for a while and (in theory) would have fixed immediate problems.

I'll keep the list posted. The other 93 is still in play as well- the guy seems to be in a bit of a cash crunch and it pretty motivated to sell, so maybe we can work something out on terms instead of price.... much the same to me.

When all is said and done, my big question is still: besides more power (that I may not really need), is there any pro or con to the turboed hdt vs. the hz motor?

Sandcruiser .. as you maybe know I bought mine HDJ-80 full specs ( freezer, leather, sun roof, LSD rear, double diesel tank, double AC ) with 353 k km ( engine rebuild ( quality, we don't know but still function fine ) minor rust in the rear tailgate door .. for 11k USD :.

I'm sure you can find 1HD o r 1HZ engine here with overal good km and performance for the same price ..

great! very good info on pricing.

I'm off to look at a 93 hzj tomorrow that is advertised at 15K USD. "Full extras" "Impecable" .... we'll see.

David: if you can find me a good hdt for 11K USD, tell me. I would seriously consider flying down to buy it... I may need to head down to Panama City next week anyway for business.

ooof

i'll keep everyone posted... as for now, I decided to wait and shop some more, sooner or later a great deal will pop up... meantime, I'm going to drop a few K on my hj60 and enjoy it for a couple more years
