Hi all.
I'm currently putting a new head on my 94 1fzfe.
The new head did not come with gears on both the intake and exhaust camshafts.
How do I remove the gears from my old camshafts. I can see a couple of cir clips but an advice would be appreciated.
And yes I did put in the service bolt before removing my old camshafts.
Thankyou

Curious, the head you bought was brand new OEM? It came with cams and valves, just no gears? What was wrong with your old head and what did this bad boy cost ya?

According to the parts diagrams and FSM, the camshaft gears are part of the camshafts. They are not available as a separate item, and the FSM never shows their removal from the shafts.
Also, the "new" camshafts in your first picture appear to have some sort of coating on the lobes and are not polished. Nothing looks right to me in that picture.

OEM head?

Never seen cams with a 'black oxide' looking coating and the cams from Toyota have the cam gears installed.

This is a new OEM head:

Is that your old Cam and valves on the new head? If I'm not mistaken I think they come bear.
The seats for the semi circular plugs also appear different. Hard to tell from the photo but the shoulder looks thinner.

A borrowed pic. Yes the head comes 'Bare' and you supply the other parts (used or new) just posting for comparison sake and to illustrate that cams (even when ordered new) come with the inboard gears installed.

The machining/casting of the head doesn't look quite right. Is it an aftermarket head, which brand, Made in Chyna??

We know what list price and I think dealer cost is around 1250. Where's the best place to buy one of these?

Now we just need the OP to spill the beans and tell us what country he bought this head from!!!

Can you expand on this a bit more? Is your picture of a new OEM head casting with used or new valves/cams installed? I thought that toyota only sold the casting and other parts but not complete head? Or was there a way to order the whole head? I'll be bummed if there was a way to order a fully build OEM head....I ended up getting my old one resurfaced but would have much rather had new for the time/money it took me to get it worked on.

See post #7 above.

Doing some thread necromancing here but going through the same thing. For intake cam - remove the bolt (not reverse threaded, its regular) in the end. The gears will come off. For the larger gear, remove the circlip above it then use a 3 jaw puller. Install - make sure the groove and the pin line up and tap it with a small brass hammer circumferentially, install circlip, other gears, then bolt. The other gears also have some pins/grooves. The timing mark will be impossible to put on where its in a different position due to the pins/grooves.
