I'm looking into head studs for the 1FZ... It should not be difficult to gather the required parts. Is anyone else interested in these? The clamping they provide is superior to bolts... not to mention how much easier it is place the new head gasket and head into place.

I would consider a set if not too spendy. I assume that at some point I'll be doing the headgasket and head studs seem like a good idea. Even my old VW had those and it made it real easy to line it all up.

what torque would you use? IIRC the head bolts are torque to yeild, changing to a nut and changing the material would change the torqure procedure required to get the same clamping force

also there is not much room under the cams. I cant remember exacly how close they were, you would need a repeatable control over how much exposed stud remains, to tall will hit, too short and not enough thread engagement in the nut. still not sure if there would be enough room. a tension nut is much taller than the head of a tension bolt, plus you need at least one full thread past the end of the nut, anyboady got an open valve cover to take a look?

wil the head clear the firewall if it has to travel up studs?

I would not be interested in the cost if the only benefit was easier assembly, if it will help with H/G reliability then I would be when I have to do the HG job (hopefull far in the future) , but has anyone had any problems with the re-desighned Toyota head gasket?

I just pulled my head to repair a burnt exhaust valve in #1 cylinder and I second Landtank, good luck lifting the head high enough to clear the studs with the motor in the truck. Toyota is known for their reliability so why mess with something they spent countless hour engineering. Burnt head gaskets weren't the fault of the head or head bolts design but that of the head gasket. I can't see where a lot would be gained from studs. Just my opinion.

MSGGrunt,

As I recall, you did not have a HG failure, correct? How did your HG look overall, and at the rear of #6? Can you post a pic?

There should be plenty of room for the studs to be installed. I would guess the price would be in the $125 - $150 range. The manufacturer of the studs will probably have a recomended torque setting.

You guys are right, just peeked under the hood... it will not happen. The head would need to be set in place, then install the studs. Head bolts and head gasket failures could probably be linked... Economics, ease of service, faster to assemble on the line, those all come into play. Studs are a better fastener.
