Hello everybody,

I have 1997 40th Anniversary Land Cruiser with 1FZ-FE in Czech Republic and I am thinking about switching to diesel. I can purchase Land Cruiser from 1991 for 6000 dollars with 1HD-T. My question is, given that I would have whole machine to source everything from -- how difficult would the swap be ?

This is the machine itself:

If the steering wheel is on the same side, and have the same type on trans (auto or manual I mean) its fairly easy. Some wiring involved, but if you have an entire donor vehicle, the mechanical bits are bolt on.

Steering wheel on the same side, trans is different - i have I believe A343F automatic while the car has manual transmission.

Is the engine 1hd or 1hdt ?

That's a 1HD-T, no doubt. Like Tweeek said, if you have the whole truck it's not too bad. I'd stick with the manual trans tho and source the clutch parts if they are different which they probably are. They're not too hard to get from the UAE or several other locations.

No such thing as a 1HD, that would be the 1HZ (non-turbo diesel) which has a different head (IDI vs. DI), but pretty well the same bottom end as the 1HD-T.

There is no A/C there ? What the heck , I am sticking to 1fz-fe :(

So I am now for six months in Ireland and it seems that there are pretty good prices on the used cruisers. I got one offer for about 3300 dollars , 1991 imported 1hd-t with auto transmission. The car was sitting for year and is now not registered. Couple of questions, does the right hand driver 1hd-t fit the left hand driver 1fz-fe without any issues ? What should I look for when inspecting the vehicle ?

If I do swap , I suppose that whole bunch of things I will need to throw away as it will not fit the left hand driver vehicle , dashboard, cables etc.

Vehicle has 300k kilometers, according to the owner no accidents, little rust.

It will still fit, your headaches will come with the wiring harness not reaching, as well as a few other items (glow timer wiring/relays). It is possible to make it work, just alot more work. Maybe you can source a LHD wiring harness as well?

Tom's fahrzeug sells pretty old engine and the price seems pretty high:

4000 euro for engine like that when I can buy the whole car for less , they suggested that the conversion itself should be around 2000 to 3000 euros. My friend from Czech Republic is selling 1hd-ft for 3700 dollars:
Toyota Landcruiser HDJ80 - Motor 4,2td 24v - 1HD-FT - Děčín, prodám

I sill think that it is pretty high price.

Not for a good running 1HD-FT it's not.....the FT is a more desirable motor in comparison to the 1HD-T

Does anybody know how is it with diesel swaps in Kansas ? I plan to leave the car on US plates and will be paying the tax every year on the car to have it registered properly. Just curious how the diesel swaps are dealt in Kansas, heard that in some states you need to have the engine from the same year or newer.

What is the exact difference between 1hd-t for automatic and manual transmission ? The only thing I can see is the throttle position sensor on the injection pump ?

I doubt it matters here in Kansas. But I will tag @cjmoon and @turbophil as they both have cummins in their trucks.
