I have a 1993 Yota cruiser, factory lockers, ect. . 251 Thousand miles and still running! These vehicles should be a benchmarker for the auto industry.

I bought this cruiser 2 years ago from a girl who had had it since she was 16, and all service had been done at toyota. Just before I bought it, the whole vacuum system had been redone, new radiator, PS pump and some other odds and ends. However after she had spent 3000k for all this the head gasket went out on her and she was ready to bail....enter me. I purchased this guy at 207,00 miles for $3600 and drug her home. I got in touch with Cdan and got the parts for fixin, had the head redone and basically had a new top end. It has run great for me, with no problems up to this point.

Anyway, she's starting to run a little rough, rod clattering and leaking oil front and rear seals. (Im afraid to much offroad fun LOL) Im moving to the city in December and decided rather than buying something new,I am going to rebuild this motor since I have a work truck to drive around right now, and have the cash to do so.

I figured that if I was going to do this, I might as well mod it up a little bit and get some more horsepower while im at it. Ex. boring 30 over, milling the heads, header built ect. I considered the 5.3L swap but just cant justify spending that much on something thats going to become a toy in a couple years.

My problem is I have no idea about what I can do to this motor as far as mods go, and how much is to much. I would appreciate any advice or comments. I will be documenting this rebuild thoroughly for you guys with a price list.

So far I have learned.

Dont dip the block for fear of the dreaded oilpump drive bushing

Replace trans torque converter seal

New motor mounts

new water pump

I plan on buying a rebuild kit but what should I do about pistons, rods, and crank? Can I buy performace pistons for this, is it worth it?

Thanks

Marshal,

I'm planning the same here in the next 'when I have time and can afford it': see earlier posting from me...

I have the donor motor and will start un-installing everything, cleaning and then reinstalling/rebuilding everything. What's get done, re-used or replaced, will depend on what everything looks like. I have heard and read that the pistons/cylinders can go 600K. So my idea is a good, professional hone and new rings IF the pistons and cylinders/sleeves look good. Head should get 'decked' and valves get re-ground and reseated. Crank bearings, same thing. How good/bad do they look ? The crank should be good plus the cams. Of course, all PM items should be done but I guess it depends on how far you want to take the rebuild and what you want to spend !

Hope this helps ?

Rgds...

I like to see your progress. When mine dies, I'll have Randy rebuilt it and bore it out to 4.6/7 with a superchrager. In the mean time, I'll keep driving it until it blows a head gasket.
