I looked at a '93 LC yesteday, it has a burn oil smell when I opened the hood. Do you really get burn oil smell in the engine compartment if the engine is burning oil. Tail pipe look very clean. Head and block are very clean too (not detail recently), there is no fresh oil on the external part of the engine. It has 135,000 miles on it.

Any of you has a oil burning 1FZ engine and what is your mileage?

Thanks

Look on the manifolds, mine is leaking oil from the valve cover gasket, yours may be.

Does it smell like kerosene?

If it does then it just might be from engine degreaser, it gets absorbed into the firewall material.

Oil leaking from the pan arch or rear main can migrate to a point where the front driveshaft can fling it onto the exhaust pipes or manifolds. If the burning oil smell is under the hood it is almost certainly an oil leak that is finding it's way to the exhaust .

I keep a quart of oil next to my battery, too :-)

What about the usual Exxon Valdez event that accompanies each oil change?

could be some tune up or engine cleaner stuff he just put in/on because he is selling.

Problem is it could be coming from quite a few areas in the engine compartment and if the seller is aware if them, they are removing any obvious evidence before you view the vehicle. Not everyone who is selling a cruiser holds the same values of those of us who are 'heads' if you will about them or the same values as the wheeling community in general. Just 02.

Any leaks under the truck.

FYI, most of us keep a quart of oil next to the battery. Sometimes I have 2 bottles there.
