I'm running a Jan 77 2f into my 1974 fj40 and needed some advice on the wiring setup for the sending unit and alternator and any other changes that might needed to be changed.
I would like to know the best route for the alternator and oil sending unit wire since they are in the opposite side than the 1f. Also im running PS so i wouldn't be able to locate the alternator on the drivers side. I would like to have the cleanest look as possible.
Any pictures would be great and thanks in advance.

74 to 77, the OPSU and CTSU are the same values.

A 79-87 alternator with solid-state internal regulator will drop into the 77 alternator bracket, while upgrading from 40 to 60 amps, and ditching the clanky mechanical volt regulator. It only requires a switched 12V power wire to tell the alternator to wake up & charge the big wire to the battery.

Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a really dumb question, but I have a '77 2F in my '71, when I put it in I ran a 40 amp alternator with the external VR. So I can go to the newer one a a drop-in, great, (dumb question alert), all it needs is a hot wire from the ignition aside from battery connections ("switched 12v power wire")?

I will answer both questions:

The BEST way to reroute the alternator B+ wire is to pull the harness and un-tape it for access to the White/Blue B+ alternator wire. This wire has several splices in it, but can be re-routed it to the passenger side without messing with these splices. It is NOT long enough to reach the new position of the alternator! You will have to purchase some White/Blue 10ga wire and extend it to reach the new alternator position. I sell the correct wire, ring terminal, rubber boot, and non-adhesive harness tape if you need it.

For a key switched hot wire you can use the White/Red wire that originally went to your voltage regulator. Just extend it to reach the new alternator. As above, you can make this look a LOT neater if you pull the harness, un-tape it and re-route the wires as needed. You will still have to extend them but they will be inside the harness instead of strung through the engine compartment.

Thanks coolerman. I will definitely buy the parts recommend. Also what's the best way to clean some overspray from when I painted the cruiser a few years ago please? The overspray is on the harness.

Strat by remivng the harness from the truck.
Untape the entire harness except for at the harness branches so the harness retains the factory shape.
Then:
Soda Blasting
I have a Harbor Freight Soda Blaster. This is the best way to remove LIGHT overspray from a soft plastic connector housing. Yes it will slightly etch the surface of the connector. You can clear coat the connector and improve the appearance after soda blasting. Heavy overspray I would just replace the connector shell with a new one, or a non painted used one.
For LIGHT paint overspray on wires, again, soda blasting is the fastest way to clean them.

For heavy paint overspray on wires I have a far less fun way of doing it...

Vinyl gloves, Acetone, X-acto knife with plenty of replacement blades, paper towels, and lots of elbow grease.
Soak a paper towel in Acetone and wrap it around an individual wire with paint on it. Let it soak for a couple of minutes. Remove it, apply more Acetone and choose another wire and repeat as needed.
After doing a couple of wires go back to the first wire and start CAREFULLY scraping off the paint using the X-Acto blade. It should be much softer now.
Don't scratch the insulation! You will develop a feel for how to do it without damage quickly.
Warning! Be careful with the Acetone! It will etch the surface, or outright dissolve, some plastics. Test a hidden connector side before wiping it down completely.
Acetone will NOT harm the vinyl bullet connector housings. It actually does an amazing job of cleaning them.
Acetone will also remove decades of fading from wires that have not been painted.

After all the cleaning, tape the harness back up with your choice of harness tape.
