Sound like a sweet conversion. I just did a 3B swap in a customer's 40 this week. But I have to inquire as to why one would spend well over $13Kto get 4mpg better mileage? Its a unique and a cool swap, but we aren't lucky enough to get the mileage increase the smaller lighter 40s can get.

From what I've seen it's just about being able to say you have a diesel, and say it gets better mileage then an equivalent petrol engine.

People waste money in australia too, the land of the diesels.

Some go to the same expense as you would in america to fit a diesel, just to fit the 100 series diesel (1hd-fte) into other cruiser models (and sometimes nissans). The reality is the engine is not that much better then other diesels. It's just about being able to say 'I have what most consider to be the best diesel engine in my car'

What is funny is how silly they will look in a few years.. Now that NA diesels are extinct from australia, and the v8 diesel is the standard, it won't be long before there is a surplus of cheap ex mine trucks and parts for sale.

It's more like 7mpg difference, not 4. Either way, you don't spend 13k on an engine conversion for the MPG difference alone.

In all seriousness, owning a cruiser isn't about an ROI or bang for the buck, if you wanted to be economical you can go buy a honda odyssey - seriously...

Overall I'm really impressed with this engine, it's efficient in an 80 series where economy is typically not found. It's very quiet and refined, a bit slower than the 1FZ but I can live with that.

We have installed 6.2's, 6.5's, 12ht's, 2h, 3b, GM v8, you name it. I feel like this is the best engine for the money in an 80. I would choose the 6.5, but exhaust routing gets restrictive to the driveshaft and prevents droop, that engine gets more power than the 1HD-T and similar fuel economy (200hp with 360 torque). The toyota diesel is quieter and more refined, plus it's a much easier install.

Again, it's not about economy; so rove is partially right, it's about having something different. But it's also something that won't blow headgaskets ;-)

You can import or pickup a RHD Diesel 80 for about 15-18k into Canada these days. I agree there are more benefits than just mileage. With no ignition system and the low end torque coupled with an automatic to act as a torque multiplier they make pretty good off-roaders.

One thing I'm wondering is does the FZJ-80 come stock with a 12/24V starting system?

Apparently the JDM Diesels also have beefier drivetrain components from what I'm told. Not sure about that since I've take out 3 birfields in 5 years.

Anyway sweet looking conversion!

fj/fzj is all 12V (at least in North America)

Drivetrain between gassers and diesels is exactly the same.

How expensive was the entire transplant if I could ask? Thanks.

Are you still full time 4x? Seems a little low considering you have an auto and they are supposed to be a little better than the h151f

There's more to diesel swaps than mpg and bragging. My hats off to Torfab, Proffitt's, Eco and every other shop willing to help guys get a diesel in their cruiser.

Right now I'd like to find a nice high roofed 6X series with a diesel. There's a beautiful one here and it even has those side stripes.

19mpg burning used cooking oil is where it's at.... I don't believe i have ever seen a diesel 80 with an automatic... I want one even more now!

posted with my thumbs.

Sounds about right to me.
I have a 1HDFT in a US 80 series, with a full time case, still with the original gas gearing, running a 5 speed manual, 33" tires and all the goodies as seen in my sig line and im seeing about 18.5mpg mixed driving.

At some point I'll do a mileage check running 60-65mph, but that 18.5 is mixed driving, and sitting at 70mph + on the highway.

Out of curiosity what RPM are you seeing on the highway at 70mph?
Thinking about trying to source a set of european HDJ81 gears to bring my highway RPM's down

I would expect 19 with mixed driving, but I thought all that cruising might yeild a bit better.
UK what 5speed you running? H151F? I can't track milage as we use KMs, but if i can keep out of the skinny pedal I have gotten down to 10l/100km on a few long trips. (55-60) mph average

I think its the H151, or the H150
Came out of a Japanese cruiser. I didnt see any data plate or anything on the tranny

So 100km is roughly 62 miles and 10L is 2.64 gallons so thats what ... almost 23.5mpg?

Not bad. What RPM are you seeing sitting on the highway at say 110kmph (70mph)

With the 35's my speedo is out 17km/h @ 100km/h, so I can drive 70 mph at about 2300 rpm. Rubber overdrive really helps.

Mixed driving I will average 11.5l/100km

I'm assuming you guys are all quoting in US gallons?

If so, those figures are probably a touch on the low side but acceptable given the roofrack, heavyload etc...

My long term average over the last 30k has been 25.1 MPG imperial (so just under 21 US) but that includes some heavy towing along with a few thousand miles of gentle long distance touring.

That's a 5 speed 1-HDT btw, 1HDFT's are noticeably more economical in my experience.

I'm 2100rpm at 60mph (gps speedo) right now with the A442F trans, 33" tires, and 4.10 factory 80 gears

I think your auto tranny disqualifies you from this conversation, but nice for a comparison.;)
