1997 Landcruiser stumbles, engine loses power, will not restart, blown fusible link

I have a 1997 Toyota Landcruiser - recently car began to stumble while driving with loss of power then engine cuts out and will not restart although it sounds like it's trying. Blown fusible link, traced all wiring looking for short to no avail. Recently replaced starter and battery but seem to be unrelated. Suspected ignition switch, EFI relay, and lastly alternator. This is what I now suspect but don't see fluctuation in voltage output. Any ideas? 3rd towing in 6 weeks and I'm a soccer mom to boot!

Old fusible links can fail, simply because of age. It may be your problem or it may be completely unrelated. Are you having any issues since repairing the link? Is it throwing any codes?

fuel pump? mine went out and after a couple weeks of dicking around i gave up and took it to a toyota mechanic. he rewired it and now it works great!

I had some of the same problems but not that bad. It ended up being the connector to the fuel pump. It was very corroded. To get to it, remove the back seats, pull up the carpet, remove the cover, and you will see the top of the tank. Be careful when removing the fuel line with a bolt in it because it will be pressurized. When removing the assembly, note how it comes out. You will then be able to inspect the connection.

What about the very basics like the distributor cap?

Which fusible link blew?

Did you replace it? If not, it is not surprising it won't start.

Did it blow again? If it burned out, there is something shorted, so you have to look harder.

Is the check engine light on?

Could it be the alternator?

It was the EFI system injector 6 shorting out -- I now have a rebuilt alternator! Thanks for the help folks.

Sounds to me like a loose battery terminal. Only difference is the blown link. Maybe the starter wires or large ground coming off the block is loose or something like that.

Friend of mine had a very similar issue with his blazer and it was a loose battery connection. He didn't have a blown link though.

Scenario, driving, hit a bump in road, sputter then engine cuts out, no codes, no check engine light, tries to turn over, but won't. New starter, new battery, etc. Bewildered!

How about the wiring loom across the bulkhead - maybe that's shorting when you are going over said bump?
