$8900
******* Up for sale is a 1997 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 4OTH ANNIVERSARY WITH FACTORY LOCKERS AND COMPLETE ENGINE REBUILD Truck is solid rust free has about 1500 miles on the engine rebuild no leaks or issues mechanically truck is ready to be driven anywhere truck has a basic old man EMU lift installed and brand new cooper sst pro tires and aftermarket wheels truck has a little paint fade but she is a great starting platform to start a build or drive as it is*********

I have checked it out as good as I can remotely.

The bad: Paint on hood, front fenders and roof are not good, They purchased this st auction and apparently between dealers had exchanges info on previous owner and miles on new engine, but no receipts. There is a 59k difference between ODO and autocheck I ran. If rebuild was done right and it's only 1500 miles on new motor, then the difference on ODO does not matter much to me.

If anyone is local in Dallas and can take a look at it for me that would be great. I did put a hold deposit after many conversations pictures videos etc. I'd much rather take a hard lesson and lose a hold deposit than a purchase that soaks me. (4040 W Davis, Dallas, TX 75211)

If you PM me I can share drop box with video and more pics. If this is the wrong place to post you can nuke it, but if I end up not buying it will have pics and info with a price.

I researched that one myself out of curiosity though not in person. I also saw the issue with the mileage on a carfax. The biggest concern IMO would be resale value. I looked up the Texas emissions reports on that LC and sometime between 8/18/2011 (199453 mi) and 11/27/2012 (141258 mi) is when the rollback occurred.

You can find that information here for what it's worth: http://www.mytxcar.org/txcar_net/VehicleTestHistory.aspx?type=VIN&code=jt3hj85j8v0171509#null

Yup. I saw that too. I figured about 59-60k mile issue. To me, if the rebuild really was done and done right (with receipts) and the truck has no rust issues. The difference is minor.
As to resale, 10 more years and you get to the point where it will not matter as much because maintenance and what is current in he vehicle will trump it. (I.e. When you look at a redone 40 today, will you care about miles if the guy you get it from has redone most of it?)

I did discover, oops yea we can't get the receipts. So that is the main reason I'd like an eyes on/drive if the vehicle.

I saw that 80 when it popped up. Been calling them and never have got then to answer the phone.

Yea when I first called the dealer said they had three other calls on it. I figured maybe more if a sales tactic. I did have to put a deposit and agree to the price they were asking, because "they had someone there with cash to take it as is." I asked that they fix a few things first and throw in a spare tire.

They were supposed to also have sent me a quote I could sign as part of the deposit. Well.. I was charged the deposit and have yet to get the quote. (all this is why I prefer an in-state purchase where I can see, and drive before, this type of thing happens.) The fix a few things is what they say is taking time to quote, but it should not be that difficult. (it should cost X to fix Y and z for parts)

I’m in Dallas and will swing by there tomorrow if time permits (doing Mecum Auction most of the day). On a related note, that’s a rather shady stretch of Davis and I’d be hesitant buying a ‘too good to be true’ deal in that area.

A fellow mudder @ThomasMore66 from Texas recommended Pablo from Tandem Automotive. I called them and they are going to drive it back to their shop and look it over.

Sort of a bummer that it's a questionable area. I'm not familiar with the area at all.

The last day has made me nervous (deposit charge with no quote) passed from sales to an internal assistant. She is now a go between.

If the rig is in the shape as described, photo'd, and there are no major mechanical issues. Then I'll be happy. If not, Ill be sad and (from what read on their site) I will get a refund of my deposit and keep looking else where.

Well. Pablo drive over for the check and drive... they were closed.?. I verified with the dealership yesterday that Pablo would be over to pick up the vehicle and drive it.

It seems like the dealership just doesn't want to sell it. (Or there is something wrong). It's likely this deal (or no deal) will fall apart. Monday is going to be interesting.

I went to go look at this truck last Sunday 9-3-2017, had to wait while another gentleman was looking at it, he ended up "walking " so I went and looked it over. I got the same story about the motor being rebuilt but there was no paperwork recording or backing that up. I was even told that the car had belong to an older lady, and had to hold back the laughter. I asked Julio why the didn't list the mileage the the correct higher mileage and was told it was listed on the car fax which I thought was shady. Don't know if you were told about the damage on the left rear door at the door catch causing it to be almost impossible to open from the outside without ripping the door handle off. Looks as if it was backed into something with the door open. The reason I "walked" was I took it for a short test drive and try to engage the lockers and could never get them to engage. The dash lights continually flash red and they never engaged. I'm not trying to scare you about this truck but make sure that you are aware of anything that may not have been disclosed to you .

Thanks for the info. This has been odd from (almost) the start.

None of this was disclosed to me. In fact the opposite. Everything works great, lockers work, no mechanical problems and other than the seats all electrical parts work.

I personally purchased a 97 Anniversary from a good distance a few years ago. I got screwed in the deal. Unless you can go see it in person with reasonable possibility of purchasing it, let someone else buy it.

Post what you want to buy, someone WITH some integrity and a backbone will step up. Apparently this seller lacks both after reading the posts.

GLWS

I sent an email tonight to their generic Info email address (the same one they asked me to use for correspondence). Letting them know about the issues discovered and asked for the deposit.

Within 5 minutes of sending the email I received a phone call. (unfortunately I was not quick enough to pickup the call)... Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day.

At any rate, if anyone is in Texas and they want a 40th they can check out onsite. It may or may not be worth it you will have more information and I would be happy to share the Autocheck and CarFax reports with you.

Maybe you can get this one for a reasonable price, considering its issues.

It is sad to say my first foray into buying a vehicle remotely has not been fun.

Ok.. so here is my final feedback as to the challenges noted on this thread.
I have been in communication with the dealership. They have agreed to refund my deposit.
I do need to clarify, there has been some miscommunication between myself, the dealership, and the great guys (Pablo and Alex) at Tandem.
This miscommunication is not 100% on the dealer. I also made some rookie mistakes during our conversations.
The vehicle will no longer be on hold shortly as I am not going to purchase it.

I drove it about two weeks ago and I passed on it. Things can change in two weeks...but here is my experience.

#1...The lockers did actually engage for me. Yes!!!

The brakes did need work...they barely worked at all. In fairness, that was disclosed to me beforehand. The drivers side rear door did not open, but per the young man helping me, the door would pop open unexpectedly...so he sat in the back seat while I test drove it, just in case the door flew open. All the electronics seemed to work, door locks, sun roof, signals, mirrors etc...except the drivers seat adjustments, but that is super common. A/C blew cold and hot. Bumpers were a little beat up...but no biggie and can be replaced with ARB aftermarkets. The OME looked in good shape. I didn't notice any rust issues. No bad musky smells inside. New front seat covers were nice. Drove straight, true and comfortable...no wobbles or weird noises. However, because of the brake issues I did not get on the highway. Most of the comments above from others are on track.

The main reason I passed was because the engine seemed to be running very hot...and I do mean very hot. I have drove other 80's. On this 80...all appeared ok from just looking at the engine bay and under, but I was still concerned about the "new" engine build and who actually built it (I was told it was just a guy). The young man helping me wasn't sure if the "new" engine build came with a written warranty. Some engine bay parts were new and some parts looked like they were baked, cracked, deteriorated from excessive heat...and looked ready to give up. I just didn't trust the "new" engine build would hold up...but what do I know.

#2...They also had a Land Rover Defender 110 tucked away in the back that will be coming up for sale.

#3...I am a proud owner of a FJ40 purchased from Jeremiah Proffitt. If any one sees him, give him a big hug for me.

Good luck in your search!!

It has the original cotter style clamps on the hoses if it was a rebuild I don't know why you wouldn't have changed the hoses. look at the phhh and see if there is one there too. That would say to me that engine has never been rebuilt

Brake booster looks new and has tag on it also, looking at the vacuum lines those look original with one broken up on the manifold, now I could be wrong but I think the yellow paint dot on one of the vacuum lines indicates it was original meaning never been changed I don't remember though, you could look at plugs wires for date on them too
