1996 LC Speaker Direct Replacement?

I have searched and searched but have not found specific info regarding the speaker replacement in a 96 LC, I know many have used the pioneer speakers in earlier model LC's, but saw stated in many threads that these will not work in later year LC's The pioneer's I am speaking of are ts-G1641R fronts and ts-G1041R for the rears.

anyone know of any specific speaker that will fit on a 96 LC?, I am impartial if they fit under the stock speaker grill or not, I can use the aftermarket grill if need be. I would like to replace the front doors speakers and the rear door speakers as well as the front tweeters that are mounted in the dash, I read from a thread that the pioneer carrozerria ts-F1000 are a bolt in to the tweeter dash locations.

I am not intersted in replacing the head unit or adding amps or subwoofer, I just want a bit better sound and an easy as possible install for minimal as possible $$.

any help, info appreciated.

I am curious about that too. Saw a pair of TS-G1041R for sale in Walmart, and am wondering whether it will fit my 96 LX450 assume same as LC. The other important question is whether it is significantly better than the stock.

I put the exact ones you speak of in all four doors of the 96 I just sold. Fronts were a tight fit, but fit none the less.
I bought them at BestBuy because they had them and price matched walmart.com

How is the sound quality. IIRC, the stock is pioneer too. Was there a significant improvement?

they can't be any worse than stock, thye're the junkiest junk.

I liked them. They are a ton better than the dry-rotted OEM speaks.
The back of the rear door harness had to be cut out, but no big deal. A slight modification. The sound quality was worth it.

I just ordered the updated numbers from Crutchfield: TSG1642R and TSG1042R as well as some Kenwood speakers that are supposed to fit the dash (drop-in) we will see. I'll post when I get it all installed.

that's exactly what I was looking for, thank you, actual first hand experience....

the speakers that mount in the bottom part of the dash are the tweeters, correct? did you replace these as well, the part # I mentioned above I got off of a post, but not sure the year of the LC, it looked like a 95/96/97 to me.

from my research, you can replace the dash mounted tweeters with a 4" speaker..direct drop in. whatever you use for the dash should also work for the rear doors as iirc they use a 4" as well. also interested in which current line of cheap doors speakers work for the fronts as my stock setup leaves much to be desired.

I just unplugged them since the door speakers are now 2-way, no point in having 2 tweeters within inches of each other.

I have the TSG1642R and TSG1042R in mine. Sound pretty good and dirt cheap. For the most part a direct replacement, but I have to use some foam weatherstripping on the fronts and you have to cut out the bottoms of the "bucket" for the rears (it will be obvious when you pull them out).

ok, so the front lower dash speakers are just speakers, where are the tweeters located? Also, is the speaker in the rear cargo area a subwoofer? I am guessing for the most part that it is not necessary to mess with the sub or the tweeters if you are simply trying to upgrade the sound a bit? I don't want to spend much $$ or time doing this really.....

ok, so getting confused, the dash speakers are tweeters then? I see what you mean, I think the ts-g1042r's will fit there as well, so I may just get 4 of those, 2 for the rear doors and 2 for the dash, I don't think I am going to mess with the factory rear sub.

found a place where I can get all 6 speakers shipped for under a hundo.....

I'm not going off numbers, but the 4" pioneers that fit the rear doors will not fit the tiny space the tweeters are in inside the dash.
I think the P/N confusion is the fact the the 1-way speakers and the 2-way speakers are only 1 number off of each other. BestBuy only has the 2-way speakers for the doors, so I got them. I guess had I gotten the 1-way speaks then I would have replaced the tweeters in the dash, but oh well. I spent about $80 on four 2-way speakers for the doors only.

I disconnected all other speakers: dash, rear cargo tweeters, and factory sub, every speaker in the rig had dry rotted, so they were sounding like crap. The rear cargo tweeters really do nothing for sound quality anyway. No one is back there. It greatly improved sound, but still is not a speaker-show.... more so a factory replacement upgrade.

Pioneer part number TSG1642R (6.5") replaced the TSG1641R and the TSG1042R (4") replaced the TSG1041R. Both speakers (old and new) were 2-way speakers. They are essentially the same speaker...the speaker cover has been changed slightly but, the speaker themselves are identical. I pulled the specs for both the old and new model for both sizes and they are identical.

In regards to the dash speakers...I went with a Kenwood 3-way speaker (KFC-1061S) as the dude said that acoustically they would match better than the other 2 alternatives (JL Audio and Kicker). This is supposed to be a direct drop-in fit with no modifications - there were only 3 speakers that were a direct drop-in fit.

So, that is what I ordered...when I get back to the States and install...I will let you guys know.

I also picked up an Alpine IDA-X100 deck (basically a digital media receiver) to replace my other Alpine deck (I can't remember the model)...totally a point-of-purchase sale. It went something like this..the dude, "do you need anything else with that, possibly a new deck?"....me, "sure what do you have?"...the dude, "how about an Alpine IDA-X100 digital media receiver?"...me, "how much is that?"...the dude, "I have that on sale for $259.99 or I have an open box item for $233.99"...me, "if there is nothing wrong with that open box one, let's go with that sucker"...the dude, "sir, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, it comes complete with everything and the factory warranty, as well as our 30 day warranty"...me, "sold."

Lastly, according to "the dude" the wiring harness that he included will work with the factory amp. I will probably end up replacing the factory amp and going with a lower power amp to power the speakers as I would like to add a small (6" or 8") sub in the back to help me with my lows a bit. Anyway...all of that for under $400...and I will receive a "Refer a Friend" offer which is supposed to be good for some $$ off of a friend's purchase. I'll of course give that to someone here on Mud.

Just to clarify, are these Pioneer speakers supposed to be a drop-in fit for the '96 front and rear doors? You mentioned the differend speaker grill covers, but those won't be used if they are drop-in behind the factory grills. I'm just checking to make sure these are *supposed* to fit behind the factory grills - given the very shallow depth before the door brace in the 96-97 trucks.

I understand you won't know for sure until you get back and try it out, but is the plan for a factory drop-in fit?

When you install the deck don't forget to unplug the factory amp in the glovebox, otherwise you will blow the dome fuse, I speak from experience.

On another note, I have a 96-I am going to upgrade the four speakers to polk audio db651's when I have time, the crutchfield tech said that the depth was very close and I could shim it up with some spacers. I have heard that you can use 6.5's in the rear door pretty easy, I will neglect the dash speakers as others have mentioned because the speakers I will get will be far superior to anything in the truck now.
