Bottom right corner Ford was built by my neighbor. Their company is “Conductive Classics”. They turn down an $80k offer on that car.

Cheers

This game ain't cheap! Especially a car of that caliber, from what I remember it's full Tesla swap. 300 miles range and 500hp.

Yup I went for a ride in it with the builder. He stomped on it, yup it’s fast, and boring at least to me.

I don’t think so on the 300 mile range. Maybe they got there now but it could barely do a commute here when they got it going. Considering what they paid for the car, the paint job and the Tesla donor, I would have took the money they were offered. They sold an old Chevy pickup they did an EV swap in, not sure for how much. They have had the company for three years or so and I don’t think they have booked a build yet. I could be wrong, I don’t pay a lot of attention since I am swamped with Cruisers.

Cheers

Honestly, I prefer driving EVs. They just drive better. I have a lot of seat time under my belt, racing in SCCA and NASA and driving all sorts of cars at track events and auto-x etc. EVs just drive better. If you get the chance you should try to take it for a drive. The sound and feel and smells etc are not there, but the feeling when you move your foot is just awesome. Don't get me wrong, I will always keep my ICE cars and also have my EVs. My current "side" project is a Lotus 7 replica with a carb'd 4 cylinder and 5-speed...but EVs are awesome in their own right. I like EV conversions because you can keep the looks and handling of your favorite car and inject EV performance. And modern EVs are so full of "driver aids," traction control, stability control, blah blah blah so they don't let you get crazy. But if you put the EV performance into your favorite chassis suddenly you now have something totally awesome to drive. I've been kind of sidetracked by 4x4 EV stuff, but I really want to get myself an EV sports car conversion of some sort.

This is super cool! I just went through the entire thread, instead of going to sleep at a reasonable hour 🤪 but seriously amazing work and it seems you’ve built the perfect balance of weight and range and power for off-roading.

I look forward to the day when more DIY-able EV power controls and engine management systems are available. And can integrate back into the factory car systems. EV SWAP ALL THE THINGS!!

Excited to see what improvements you make to it

Thanks man for having so much interest! It needs another 600-800 lbs of battery and then it will be in a much better spot IMO. The performance is awesome but it just runs out of juice too soon. Right now I am focusing on other projects. I have a couple customer cars and I'm converting a 1969 FJ40. Right now the EV 80 series is my daily driver commuting from home to the shop or running errands around town. I am always on the lookout for another cheap battery to throw in it. There is a ton of space where the gas tank and exhaust used to be that could hold about the same amount of battery I already have. The only other thing it needs is a more reliable way to lock up the center differential. That's been the biggest issue.

How much range (and capacity) would 600-800lbs of battery add?

It would about double my range, so currently I get 60-70 miles and if I add a second pack I'd be 120+. Enough to go from my house to a couple local trails and make it back home easily.
I'm guessing this setup would massively benefit from a part-time kit.

Bunch of drunk Aussies(are there any other kind?) drove an EV conversion cruiser across the bottom of Darwin harbor underwater for a new world record. It was a 40, but still- one hell of an EV project build!

That was a cool watch, thanks for that. I did have to turn on the CC though 😁

Back in August EVTUNERS did a little walk around and test drive of my EV Land Cruiser. Check it out!

If you haven't listened to the EVTUNERS Podcast "The Next Great Car Era" you really should. He is an excellent interviewer and asks the in-depth questions that we want to hear. Not the high-level crap that a lot of people who don't really understand the technology ask: https://thenextgreatcarera.com/

Love this project but would like to know, when will you have an 80 series specific EV "Crate Motor" and conversion kit available to purchase? ;)

How difficult would it be to double or triple the power of the motor and triple the range with the larger motor(s) ??

It will probably be awhile before I have a kit for the 80, but I am working on a kit for FJ40s right now. That market just seems more ripe and I get a lot more interest for those trucks.

As for doubling the HP it only requires an inverter upgrade, the motor is already capable of 200-300hp. Though my current battery probably couldn't support that much power.

Range is just a function of batteries. Batteries are a matter of kilograms and kilobucks. Expensive and heavy. I will probably be adding another battery soon which will double my range or more. Lots of space for it where the gas tank and exhaust used to be.
