Hello!
I recently purchased a 1995 Prado and it is in good condition overall, but there are some problems I am trying to sort out.

One worrying problem is that the "AT over temperature" light comes on intermittently in Drive and in while idling in Park.
Sometimes it stays on for long periods of time. I have driven the vehicle 10 miles since I bought it, and the AT over temp light was on the entire time.
I did not take it seriously because it came on as soon as the engine started. The check engine light sometimes comes on and then flickers back off.
The AT over temperature light does not come on at all in L or 2 gears.
Also, while in Drive, the over temperature light comes on solid red whenever I hit the brake pedal, and then sometimes goes out completely when I release the brake pedal.

Things I have already tried:
AT transmission fluid looks good to me.
While driving, the transmission functions flawlessly, did not notice any shifting issues
Tried scanning for errors using the diagnostics port. Bought an OBD1/OBD2 scanner with the correct adapter. The scanner could not communicate with the vehicle.
Used the paperclip method, shorting TE1 and E1 in the diagnostics port. When the key is in "Accessory" position, there is no check engine light coming on at all, so no codes to read.
With TE1 and E1 still shorted, I started the car, and the check engine light and the AT over temp light both flashed, but so far I can not match the flashes to any specific error code. There was no 4.5 second pause between groups of flashes. I have recorded the flashes for upload if anyone can help to decode them.
I also removed the glove compartment and disconnected the three main connectors on the ECU, sprayed them with CRC electronic cleaner, and reinstalled them, thinking maybe there was a bad connection. Pins appeared to be perfectly clean already, and there was no change in the error.

Has anyone had a similar issue? Do you have any suggestions for further troubleshooting? Should I just ignore it?
Thank you in advance!
-Chris

Clarification to my post: I'm talking about the "A.T. Oil Temp" light that is on the shifter console just in front of the shifter.

After checking around further, I realize I need to look at the temp sensor itself because it might be damaged. I will report back.
This was a helpful video by someone with a similar problem on a newer Prado:

Commenting so I can follow this thread.

Im a new 95' KZJ78 owner as well. I also have noticed that my oil temp gauge (top right gauge on dash) does tend to creep up to just under max as I accelerate but will usually settle on the upper hash mark once I start cruising at around 60kph. Dont know if this is normal or what.

Tho Im not familiar with your problem it sounds like there could be a problem in the wiring being crossed or making contact?

Hope you get some answers! is a sweet looking Prado!

Thanks! Congrats on the new KZJ78, looks great in white!
Yes, the fact that pressing the brake causes the warning light to intensify makes me wonder if there is a short or bad ground somewhere. I got under the car tonight and took some photos of the sensor, it looks intact, no obvious broken wires or loose connector. I need to remove the metal guard in that is protecting the transmission to get a better look. I will try to disconnect the connector, clean and replace it and see what happens. Next step is replacing the sensor itself I guess, but it is not easy to find out the part number.

Update:
Removed the insulated panel covering the underside of the transmission oil pan
Disconnected the AT Oil Temp sensor connector
Started the vehicle:
-When foot brake is OFF AT Oil Temp gauge is OFF in all gear positions
-When foot brake is ON (depressed) gauge is ON for all gear positions
-When ECT is ON, AT Oil Temp light is ON, even with foot break released, in all gears

------
Cleaned AT Oil Temp sensor connector with CRC electrical parts cleaner and reconnected it.
Behavior of the warning light is exactly the same as above.

Summary:
Turning on the ECT also also turns on the AT Oil Temp light, in all gear positions, with the sensor completely unplugged, or with it connected.
With ECT button off, the AT Oil Temp light is normally off, but turns on with the foot brake, with the sensor connected or disconnected.

My question for other KZJ78 owners:
Does your AT Oil Temp light come on when you press the brake? Is this normal function?
Does engaging ETC button turn on the AT Oil Temp light for anyone else?
Any suggestions about how to test the functionality of the Oil Temp sensor itself?
If anyone is aware of a retrofit that would allow me to measure actual AT Oil temperature digitally, please let me know!

I am going to just drive like this since the temp light is off when the brake is off.
I welcome any input on how the light it is supposed to function.

Thanks!

--No, AT oil temp light stays off all the entire time minus briefly when starting truck.

Does engaging ETC button turn on the AT Oil Temp light for anyone else?
--No, one ETC light turns on when depressed.

Any suggestions about how to test the functionality of the Oil Temp sensor itself?
--I am sure there is a test procedure. I can dig around some the manuals I have and see.

--Not specially for a KZJ78, but @Lutz Auto does make a kit for the 80 series. It looks like it replaces the drain plug. I think this would take some pioneering to make work. You might also find something on the Auber Gauge website as well.
Lutz Transmission Temp Kit

I agree with @coldtaco that it might be a short or maybe a ground issue. If there is a ground wire near those lights I would make sure it has good contact to bare/clean metal.

Thank you for the detailed response, this is helpful!
I've spent hours looking for manuals online, but so far none of them mention the AT Oil Temp light, AT ALL.
If you have a manual that mentions it, especially if there is a wiring diagram, I could really use a few snapshots! Thank you!

My next steps will be to remove the console plastic covers and look at the wiring. The fact that the foot brake affects the oil temp light makes me think the lighting of the brake lights themselves are influencing the oil temp light circuit. I will report back.

I checked my manuals and didn't see anything either, which I thought was odd, so I did a little googling. I suspect there are two different A343F manuals out there. With that said take a look at post #20.

A343F Temp Sensor Test

I have electrical diagrams that cover the KZJ78 model but have never gotten around to translating them from Japanese like I did with the earlier version. You're welcome to the pdf if you'd like it.

Yes, they would be helpful! Thank you!
