Decided to go ahead post some preliminary info on my swap. I've played with cars through the years but new to LC and 4WD work, so should be interesting experience. My goal for the truck is to restore and improve into a nice daily driver with some mild trail capabilities for the occasional trip to CO/NM. I bought it about a month ago thinking it probably had a blown head gasket and I'd get started on this swap. It has factory lockers, body and frame are in great shape but interior is pretry rough, although mostly completed. It is also the sought after Harley edition, see pic? Rear locker works but the front needs aome work. It was $1300, so i figured couldnt get hurt too bad on it. After looking things over after buying it I thought I had a stroke of luck and instead of HG it was a cracked oil cooler cover. But sprung another leak at the back of head after I replaced the cooler cover, so I'm throwing in the towel on on the 4.5 and getting back on the 5.3 swap.

This motor wouldn't be my first choice these days, but I already had it from a planned project a few years ago that petered out. Hopefully will have better luck here. I tore the motor down, had it bored, decked, valve job, replaced the cam and lifters (stock) and balanced, so should be solid little motor. Its been sitting bagged in the shop since.

As you can see from the pics, the motor has an LS car intake on it currently. I also have the complete corvette accessory drive to go with it, in addition to the truck accessory drive. It looks like most on here have used the truck drive, but I'm going to see how it all looks and fits and make a final decision later. Regardless, will be drive by cable.

I ordered the Marks adapter about a week ago and received it yesterday- can't beat that (dog was impressed). I ordered direct and with the exchange rate it ended up being just a scratch over $1k shipped- which still makes me a little weak kneed, but better than $1500.

A local shop is building an offroad/towing transmission for it which should be ready in a few weeks.

While I'm waiting on that I ordered some fittings, fuel line and a supra pump so I'll work on getting things plumbed. And get the old motor/trans out too, I guess.

I hope some of the folks that have been down this road will stop by on occasion and offer their thoughts and suggestions.

I see my main challenges as lack of time, money and skill- otherwise should be good to go!

nice.. i it is quite and easy install except for the front drive shaft. though i did the same swap but used a fj60 tcase. the engine is great and has lots of power and torque. i like it. since you are using the fj80 tcase it is easy to line up the trans mount to mount the engine mounts.
Here is my swap. just the stuff i posted. not much progress lately but runs and drive great.

@97LandCruser whats the hang up with the front drive shaft ?
It appears will have clearance issues with the trans pan at a minimum and some have issues with bell housing too. Most have solved the problems with lift and/or new driveshafts. I'm going to try to keep lift to a minimum so we'll see how it goes.

I can't wait to see progress on another LS swap! My LC9 5.3 and 6L80 are waiting next to my triple locked 93.
Front and rear axles along with all brakes are recently completed. Now I am welding up roof rack holes and sunroof hole too!!!!
My interior was rough as well so it is stripped clean as well.
Heaters already installed in reupholstered front and rear seats.
I too am aiming for a DD with mild trail capability along with towing a lightish trailer.

Can you not just modify the trans pan to give you the clearance ?

I wish I had the 6l80, that will be a nice combo. I thought about shopping for the newer combo, but couldn't make myself do it with the parts I already had. I think you'll avoid a lot of the headaches with DS clearance too.

my problem is with the trans where the valve body sits it is in the way of the drive line. i am also using the fj60 tcase and i think that brings it closer to midline.. for me to correct this on mine i will have to raise the suspension so the front DS will be at more ecline to clear those things.. the other option would be to do the 6l80E but i do not now how much power it will consume from the 5.3. plus compatibility and tune ability with the 5.3 pcm

If you're not going to use your A442f let me know! I may need to source one soon.

Progressions is slow.. I think I'm at a 20:1 stare at it, work on it ratio.

I'd appreciate some thoughts on engine placement from folks that have done this. Right now the transmission is bolted in at stock location with the marks adapter and the engine pretty close to level and centered between frame. No transfer case installed yet. On Kirks thread he installed his offset an inch toward driver side and level, I believe. What have others done? I can move an inch backward easy enough it appears. Would raising the engine a little help with the front drive shaft clearance issues? I'd like to keep lift at 2.5 (stock now).

Also, as I look at the tail shaft of transmission/adapter from the rear, it's clocked 2-3 degrees clockwise (low on passenger side). The engine is level side to side and transmission mount is snugged down, so I'm assuming it must be by design. Anyone else notice this?

Progress has been slow, but I'm getting close to getting the engine mounts welded in. I'm going to try to use f-body mounts on the motor-- we'll see how it goes. Will take some more pictures in a while. Here is a pic, of the front driveshaft by transmission pan. I have about 3/8 inch clearance sitting on the ground. I think it will be fine with either smaller drive shaft or maybe 2" lift--or if need be, both. What do you think? What would you consider a safe clearance here? I'm going to go ahead and get the motor mounts done and then i can do a little more flexing/testing clearances here.

Finally got the motor mounts built and welded in. On the motor side I ended up using mounts from the F-body cars. I like the idea of being able to buy replacements or upgrades off the shelf. Will be working on getting things cleaned up under the hood and getting the motor in for good (hopefully.)

I've decided to go with the truck drive and intake. It just fit better than the corvette accessories. I picked up a returnless fuel rail on ebay and will be using the corvette filter/regulator approach to fuel.

I also picked up these exhaust manifolds (Hooker #8501HKR.) I wanted to avoid headers if possible and I think these are going to work. Going to re route the brake line on the drivers side, but otherwise they should work pretty well.

More later..

Nice work, what year F body engine mounts did you use? Part numbers?
I too like the ability to purchase pRts nearly anywhere but more, the OE mounts offer much better insulating and safety features than aftermarket "hot rod" mounts
I took the nose sheet metal off mine today, ready to start a slow build!

I got these at Oreilly's mainly because of the lifetime warranty. I think they are the same from 98-2002 V8 Camaro.

Sweet, thanks.

I've read your thread, thank you for sharing, it's an adventure I. Up for.....with all the pioneers on mud it should be much easier.

it has been along while but at the time i decided to use fj60 tcase i tried to sell the trans and tcase from my 97 no one wanted except if far away then i tried giving it away and no one jumped on it.then i got tired of holding on to it. so i threw it away. this was in 2013. sucks because i forgot to pull a water temp sensor of the engine and the oil pressure sensor of it. and the tcase switches.

Those welds on the motor mounts are a work of art!
