Hi, picked up this FJ73 to go along with our 1977 FJ40 (LilRed on the 40 forum). Have a question hoping some can shed some light on. The transmission shifts fine in all 5 gears while stationary in the driveway while running with the clutch engaged but as soon as I start moving it is very difficult to shift into all the gears? Possibly air in the system (bleed the clutch)? The 73 has great power and drives good with the Holley sniper BUT I must admit that I still prefer driving the FJ40. Anyway, thanks in advance.

Hello,

Your clutch cylinders may need replacement. They give up the ghost way before the rest of the drive train does.

Quite likely, your transmission is an H55F. In old age, this transmission slips gears. Fresh gear oil could help with this. If it does not, the gearbox may need an overhaul.

Where did your truck come from?

Originally from Colombia but I recently bought it in Tennessee.

Hello,

Chances are clutch and transmission lived a hard life down there. Harsh conditions, expensive parts and creative mechanics. Not a good environment.

I would replace the clutch cylinders and then bleed the system.

Then I would put in fresh gear oil.

If that does not work, I would consider replacing the clutch and overhauling the gearbox.

Do as Juan says.
Synthetic gear oil helped mine shift a little better.

Was this issue disclosed when you purchased the truck ?

I bought it as is and it drove fine, so I’m not blaming anyone. I could just not be used to it but also realize that these older rigs need some attention. Gonna try doing a fluid swap / bleed next week. Life got in the way these last few days. It is a surprisingly clean vehicle considering the age.

LOL, not trying to blame. What you describe sounds like a major issue that doesn’t just start to happen over night.
All use vehicles are as is.
It does look really clean and I recognize it as been for sale here recently on Mud.
I would like to think that fellow members of the community would disclose such an issue.
But nothing surprises me.

changed tranny, transfer case, and differential fluids and I’m now able to shift thru all the gears. Went with the Penn Grade GL4 80-90 weight for the trans and xfer case. Definitely needed it. Thanx for the advice.
