Hey Everyone

I wanted to see what you guys recommend for what gearing ratio I should go with. I have a 1991 Land Cruiser that has the 4.0 3FE EFI with stock small tires (I think they are 31') I noticed when I would drive uphill to Tahoe from the valley in California on freeway it would be screaming in high rpm to make it up some hills struggling.

I want to upgrade my tires to 33inch and do some regearing but want to make a good choose so I can glide up those hills and engine won't struggle.

I'm not really worried about my speedometer being accurate with speed etc... I just want the car to have some extra go power up the hills and drive nice on normal roads too.

Thanks!

It's a 3FE, so there's no way around it kicking down into low(er) gear when climbing hills. Let's be real, the 3FE will struggle with any tire size and gear combination. But that's what makes it fun, right!?

If you regear to 4.56s (the next steeper option from the stock 4.10s) it will still kick down when climbing. And if you have 33" tires it will actually put you at a higher RPM at the same relative vehicle speed.

I run 295/75-16 (34"-ish) tires on my '92 with a 3FE and stock gears and it's fine. Slower than crap, but it was slower than crap with tiny little 29" tires, too.

Anyway, regearing is a fair bit of work (and/or $$$) to be done right, and the jump from 4.10 to 4.56 doesn't make financial sense whatsoever, IMHO. If you go up to 35" tires, then I think regearing would be nice. Absolutely required? No...but nice.

I have the same truck as you and want 4:88.

It's not the gears that are working against you, it's the engine.

Save your money for regearing in a jar for your future V8 swap.

for 33 foot tires you'd need a LOT of gearing...
