I have a 1993 HDJ81 Imported from Japan with a 1HDT 4.2L turbo diesel. Running 33 inch tires on the 16 inch wheels. Axle gear ratio I believe is 4.11.
Thinking about running 4.88 or 5.13s to help with the turbo lag that is present from a dead stop to acceleration. Seems like the turbo kicks in...
Hey Everyone
I wanted to see what you guys recommend for what gearing ratio I should go with. I have a 1991 Land Cruiser that has the 4.0 3FE EFI with stock small tires (I think they are 31') I noticed when I would drive uphill to Tahoe from the valley in California on freeway it would be...
Have a 1982 FJ 60, currently on 35' tires with 488 front and back gear ratio's (running super high RPMs). I would like to swap out, at least the rear, for better fuel economy. I guess my questions are as follows..
1. What gears do you guys feel would be best to make this an every day driver...
Correct me if I'm wrong....
With an open differential to determine the gear ratio: Raise both wheels off the ground, mark a tire, mark the driveshaft, rotate the tire one full revolution and count how many rotations the shaft makes.
The number of shaft rotations = the ratio.
Thanks
Jim
I stumbled on this video by accident and thought I would share as it helped me understand the logic behind how to choose the right axle gear ratio with diff tire size and all. Not planning on anything upgrades any time soon. Just taking my time and learning :)
Please post your links or other...
I have recently purchased a 1992 FJ80 with 35" tyres and 4.88 diff gears. I have also fitted a Marks 4WD part time 4WD hub kit.
It drives great, especially since the Mark's kit was installed.
I am planning to drive around the USA over 6-8 months, so plenty of miles both on and off road...
