Hey mudders.
It is time for the PS pump rebuild on my beloved HJ61. I’m finding a lot of conflicting data on-line about which kit to use; and kits range from 35$ to over $200 on SOR.
Anyone have any input on which kit to use for a Japanese ‘89 HJ61?
Not sure if these later 61s are the same as later 60s and 62s, or if the diesel / foreign vehicles had a different pump.
I found a couple vids on YouTube in which the pump being rebuilt from a later model 60 looked like mine, but then again some components can look similar and be totally different
Thanks!

It depends , is it leaking visible on the outside then a rebuild kit can be of use. It only contains O-rings and some small hardware.
If you are loosing pressure caused by internal wear then you need a new pump , which is unobtainable.

You know you raise a very good point since there is no visible leak around the pump, and truth-be-told I do not know for how long it has not worked since I rarely drive Elsie (for LC). Thinking about it - it makes more sense that it has seized up or something; I checked the PS fluid and except for looking a little dark and dirty it was at normal level (cold).
As you suggested there are no pre-loved ones to buy, so I may have to embark on a retro-fit. I’m sure the HJ61 mudders who have gone through this before me will show me the way…or at least point me in the right direction.
But..I think it is at least necessary to pull the pump off and check it thoroughly first - then maybe even try a rebuild to see what happens.
I will update as things unfold, and please if anyone has suggestions for a retro-fit please let me know
Thanks

Check if the flow valve is stuck in the bottom of the pump. Push and rotate with a flathead screwdriver and see if it pops up.Then you know why it does,t want to build up pressure.

OK help me out - what is the flow valve? I mean I can probably figure it out and I have tools and I can get under the LC, but I’m not sure what the flow valve looks like? Maybe snap a pic for me? Or gimme a good description? Ty

Remove pressure hose from top of pump. Remove 27mm nut .
Insert screwdriver, find slot on top of flow valve. Push and turn carefully and see if it pops up. There is a spring under the valve.

Thank you- will try it
I’m assuming that hose is under pressure even with the engine off. So am I gonna have spewing fluid everywhere? Or will it just be a few dribbles?

Engine off ,No pressure. Just spilling minimal oil. Refill in reservoir when done. Lift up tires and bleed air while turning steering wheel.
