1989 FJ62, what are some common issues that one should know about?

what about checking the ATF level...:) I know, dumb question.

I'm guessing start it up, run the shifter through the gears, put it in neutral and check the dipstick.

Is this correct?

I also think the tranny is supposed to be at operating temperature as well. Other than that, I think you got it.

Can someone tell me what the gap is for spark plugs in an FJ62.

I'm gonna change them and I don't have that info.

Thanks.

The roof rack on my rig is not factory...off hand I don't remember the manufacturer, but I've seen spare tires on roof racks. I always wondered how they mounted on to them.

If you post a picture, someone here will most likely be able to help you identify it. Then one of us would be better likely to offer a suggestion for a rack mount for the tire. You can always ratchet strap it down for now...

It's no big deal, I see online there are a variety of different universal tire brackets... I'll just do a little research.

Thanks

My BIGGEST issue with my 62 has been MONEY!
This is something that youll want to watch out for FOR SURE!

It starts like this...
"Id like some BIGGER tires..."

Once that thought creeps into your head, your SCREWED and its a downward spiral into poverty from that point on.

Be CAREFUL my friend...these rigs SUCK YOU IN and the next thing you know your buying a welder, hoarding scrap steel, speaking in strange tounges and EVERYTIME another cruiser passes, youll whip your head around to watch it drive by...

Its not pretty!

Sh*t, you just described my symptoms. You got me when you talked about collecting scrap steel...

I've already been through hell and back with my '85 FJ60. I can't believe I put so much money into that friggin' thing. But I can say this...I learned a lot about them. Talk about a learning curve $$$$$$

I always said never agian, unless...It's REALLY, REALLY clean.

This time I think I'll be alright, knock on wood.

The tranny fluid looks clean and smells... well, not burnt. Not really sure what it's supposed to smell like.

But I saw this '89 62 and had to check it out. I was primarily looking for rust... I knew exactly where to look from dealing with my 60. I have never seen a 60 series truck this clean in the Northeast. I actually thought it had been repainted. After looking closer I new it was original Alpine White. But...I know no matter how clean and how good it runs... there will always be issues. So that is why I started this thread.

Thanks for all the input.

One thing to be very careful of is the acceleration....They are VERY quick, so be careful touching that speed button !!! :D

Congrats on the 62 !!!

I keep meaning to ask...

What is the throttle pull switch for?

Very well stated Mr. Chicago. BTW I hear that when you start hoarding parts you wind up selling em all anyways 'cause they don't fit Vortec's. :D And yes when the skinny pedal is mashed all the way to the floor it feels like you can get out and walk faster. Just got mine and realized why I like doing the V-8's!! So much POWER!!! I must have it now!

When you want to crawl an obstacle and not mess with the skinny. Or a poor mans cruise control. But that is not recommended 'cause you will forget you have it locked.

That is a Surco (AKA Suck-O) rack. I wouldn't put much on that.

Looks CHERRY!
Nice find!

I do believe the PO of my '89 FJ62 did just that. And he got trapped and tapped hard. After reviewing all the receipts I can say they stuck him for almost every single part inside the A440 and transfercase. They replaced it all including the rear output shaft new from Toyota. I have here well over 3K in parts and labor. Sux for him but works for me as all the work was just done prior to his number three piston busting both shirts and taking out the engine.. :grinpimp:

I'm gonna leave it stock as possible. However, I am gonna try out the K&N air filter.

I paid $3500 for it.

anyone know what that pull switch that says "THROTTLE" does?

If it's just below the dash to the right of the column, it's a "hand throttle" cable (not a switch) . You can pull and turn the knon to raise and hold the engine speed. Comes in handy for creeping along up and over obstacles or while operating a mechanical winch.

Experiment with the cable mechanism a little to get the hang of the holding mechanism. It's a twist to lock and a reverse twist to unlock the holding pawl.

I'm told it's not to be used for a cruise control, but I never listen...

Try it out without the truck running to get the feel for it. The first time I messed with one, I didn't know how to get it to turn off ( twist counter clockwise and push) and the truck was stuck at 3000rpm. Fortunately, I was parked and just shut it off and read the Owner's manual. Don't pull it out fast.

thanks,

I think I will leave it alone for now.
