We currently have a 2011 FJ Cruiser NSSE MT as a daily driver and recently bought a 1987 FJ73. The FJ73 is mostly stock and in good original condition. The FJ73 is a manual and has 3F gasoline motor with the OEM canvas convertible top. It also has full doors on the back and A/C. We drove the truck home on highway at 75mph, and the truck has 135,000 kms on the clock. The truck has aftermarket wheels with BFGoodrich AT in 285/70 (which is funny b/c thats what we have on the 2011).

The near term to-do's are:
1) drive it and enjoy it
2) OEM wheels
3) possibly get a roll cage b/c the truck seems dangerous
4) remove some accessory electrical stuff it doesn't need
5) clean the top
6) freshen up suspension and steering
7) and more but don't want to be a bore

Learned about these trucks, and diesel defenders, while on surfing trips in Nicaragua and Costa Rica - never knew these even existed until last year!View attachment 889649View attachment 889650 View attachment 889651

Gorgeous. I am bringing FJ40s out of Colombia and they have plenty of these down there. I was going to ask to see if you registered that in California. I don't believe they would let you.

These trucks were actually built in Venezuela and Colombia for a time and many of the parts were built in those two countries too. They are well loved there and are used still and quite popular (only problem in Colombia is high gas price $4 a gallon).

Down in Colombia we can do the custom soft tops and this is the way to go with an FJ70 or FJ43. I want to bring them in but there is not a mature market for them yet in the US.

Truck looks great. I think you are on the lead end of a trend.

Why on earth would someone replace a factory switch with an aftermarket switch considering the function of said switch would probably not be used in the life of a vehicle. : )View attachment 906668

Because my Colombian and Venezuelan friends like to #$#$#@@ these trucks up with aftermarket stereos and alarms and stuff and oh aftermarket seats made for short guys! Don't ask me how I know!

I have a diesel one just like yours.
Mine has the stock rear roll-bar. They are very common in my country and the stock roll-bar works in conjunction with the windscreen in occupants safety. That windscreen is very solid and can take some severe beating. Obviously your full cage option is much better.
It has also some factory small pilars at the middle used to contain cargo from enter the driver compartment. I cutted what didn't mattered and i have a roll-cage now :).

nice one .. altho I never saw one of those rag tops in Venezuela ... I mean ever ..

The reason soft tops are rare in Colombia atleast is due to theft. Also for security you will see that most of the FJ40s I buy have alarm systems, electric windows, too dark tint etc. This plays havoc on the wiring as it all has to be taken out if you want an original style truck. In Colombia most suvs will have giant bass systems in the rear cargo area so you can park on the street and play tunes and drink in the street. while I do complain about all these options the more time I spend in Colombia the more I may learn to adapt and want these options!

UPDATE - my truck was exported from Japan to Colombia (Not Venezuela)!!! Thanks to GreenMachine

I really THOUGHT that looked like a Colombia truck. I REALLY want to bring in one but I am so busy with the classic FJ40s/43s.

No diesels in Colombia but in a few years we will have the 4.5 liter 70 series. Enjoy it.

Here is one at my shop in Colombia next to my 1960 Land Rover. The 70 series I believe is actually more loved than the 40 series down there. Very popular and some are very tastefully upgraded.

@fjcalifornia - great truck! Do you have photos with the soft top off and cage installed? Looks great!

Yes I do have pix with top off.

The shop tore out all of the aftermarket home spun electronics including the radio, speakers, car alarm, electric windows and more.

Truck was imported through Florida and registered in Florida. California is possible but only under the DIESEL EXEMPTION and I am on gas.

had the engine worked on for past two weeks and should be picking it back up soon..View attachment 966379

Might be one of the best color combos on a 7 series, vinyl floors left hand drive....

I might of missed this part.......is the cage tied into the frame?

Rob

Yes, the roll cage is attached to the frame and holes were made in the floor for the attachment.

The interior has been protected with Rhino liner too.

Did you do any modifications to that passenger side seat to get it to move forward so far? I've seen other pictures of 70 series and it does not look like the seat moves that far forward.

I mention this because trying to plan on being able to sleep in the back of the truck.

Thanks!
