For those of us who have never participated in a JDM aution the "3" is
3 out of what?

3 out of 6
6 is brand new
5 is one step below brand new
4.5 is REALLY clean
4 is acceptable
3 is questionable
2 is a parts rig
1 is modified

what is nice is a 4-4.5, with A interior.

plus grading in Japan is a hit and miss
as well, roll back odometers is a very common occurance.

Thanks Wayne, I should have known ( 3/6 was my average when I was in school back in the stone age ). Come to think of it I do remember my teachers referring to me as "questionable".:)

I fail to see what makes this rusty low grade non turbo cruiser worth over 18k when you can get other nicer vehicles for cheaper, even in the states.

What price do you think I should start at? I figured it was a good price to start. $18k O.B.O

Also, JDM Land Cruisers have different specs. Some people like the rarity of them. Some don't care. Not for everyone.

not a fair comparrison though since the 1989 is not legal in the states for anther 2 years ...

in the end, a seller can ask what he wants ... it doesn't mean it will sell.

if anyone does buy this unit i do have a windshield frame to replace this rusted one.

still waiting for pics under the hood ... and the original auction sheet.
you do have access to the truck, no?

sorry for noob question but why would the 1989 not be legal in the states? or is that a smog thing for some of the smog only county

It must be at least 25 years old as per the manufacture date to import legally into the USA.

If the kms are legit then that's likely why he's asking what he's asking. That being said, yes, there are so many of those around our parts here with rolled back odometers.

Hey guys. I went to Dallas (Richardson) and looked this rig over the other week after seeing it online. It could very well be actual miles. I drove it around a bit and everything seemed to function and feel nice and tight. Tires have some dry rot cracks, all wheels are OEM. Needs batteries, tires, side window frames in the FRP top, front windshield frame. Front "bull bar" is wimpy and is only held on by two 14mm bolts and wouldn't stop a Texas mosquito, much less a "bull" or a "roo". The body is really solid with no visible rust. I pulled up the mats in the back and saw no rust, and seam sealer and paint is OEM. The front windshield frame rust is from a failed dry-rotted weather-strip and I would recommend a new frame, but this one could be repaired. From all interior wear indicators for mileage; seats, console cover/arm rest, steering wheel, shift knob, pedal pads, mileage reset button, a/c knobs, carpet, etc., all look like the mileage matches. Although all these items could be replaced, I don't think so. The only underbody rust that I saw was on the very rear section of the frame and, its surface rust that could be brushed or blasted and re-coated with not much problem. The "fresh paint" that was referred to above was not fresh. It looks like possibly a dealer installed coating as it's not pitted underneath the paint, but has some “crackle” look in some places, like on the springs, where it looks like it was a thick coating. Overall, I would say this is an excellent truck. The main thing that would make this a sweet deal is if it had a “turbo diesel”. It has the 3b and not the 13b-T.
I import JDM Toyotas also and have seen many cruisers from the Japanese market, this seems to be a do-able truck and the owners appear to be legit. I met the owner/importer, but have had no dealings with the broker company that has this listed. I am not affiliated with the seller, but thought I would post my review of the vehicle since I saw it first hand.

ummm,
no rust. take a look at pic #7 and #8 above.
the side window channels will need replacing (typical for the 70 series trucks that sit outside)
the front windshield frame will need replacing. (typical fold down winsheild sweating)

the "black paint" in the frame is typical JDM rust proofing and it does crackle as it ages.

pics of engine bay?
copy of original auction sheet?

i have been importing from Japan since 2001 with hundreds under my belt.
i would recommend that if a person is going to drop $18K on a JDM to pay for a flight and go look at it in person ... and leave your heart and the red colored glasses at home.
windshield frame is $500 plus the ride plus paint.
the side window frames will be a couple hundred each plus the ride.

if it is as inspected then the flaws are minor but i would want to pop off the rear interior panels and take a look from the inside at the wheel wells.

I would take a close look at the panels below the doors especially where the steps attach. Of the four or five 70 Series I have owned or driven ( and yes I agree this is a small sample ) they have all had issues in this area and the problem was not obvious.

it is the seam near the back of the door on the rocker, this area is prone to rusting due to the over lap of sheet metal.
usually, right at the bottom of the seam area, you get a tiny bubble under the paint. if it is there, best to drill a tiny drain hole to let the moisture out and use penetrating wax spray to prevent any further issues.
