Hello.

I was on here earlier asking about HDJ-80s however turns out I cant import one till 2008. Anyways I was talking to one of my friends about diesel cruisers and it turns out one of his friends has a 1986 Diesel 60 sitting around with a sized engine. Supposedly the body and interior are in excellent shape and it had a whole bunch of work done to it before the engine gave up. Anyways he wants to get rid of it.

Anyways I tried searching to find out about engine replacement/rebuild costs but couldn't find anything out (searched for "new engine" and "2H replacement" and "2H cost").

So does anyone know how much it would cost to replace the engine? Would be fun to drive this untill I can get my hands on an 80. I'm guessing its a 2H? Its a 6-cylinder/5-Speed.

Any opinions on what I should be willing to pay for it as well? I know cruiser values vary greatly from region to region but a starting ballpark figure would be helpful.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

I'd get a 12H-T from G&S Cruiserparts. It's a direct drop in replacement for the 2H that you have BUT it's also turbocharged. A non-turbocharged diesel is only 1/2 an engine!
As for value of a truck with a blown motor, not much!

If the body is in nice shape. It might be worth a couple thousand. But thats if it is nice. The engine is really were the value is. If you spend 5k on a replacement engine. you WILL get your money out of it. If again you keep it nice. Def look up G&S Cruiserparts. They are the source.

Lowenbrau on here has a 60 with a 2H for sale. The bodys look rust on his, so it may be a good donor. just a thought. Send a PM to him.

Just a hint though, you might like the 60 over the 80. They are more cool. IMOP something about the older stuff I like.

Awesome thanks guys! Just checked out their webpage... more expensive than I was hoping... looks to be about $5k to $8k for a 12H-T, but as you say, you get what you pay for. Guess I'll check out lowenbraus rig as well.

Are there any options for rebuilding? Guess I could also look for wrecked 60s etc or at higher km engines... from what I've been reading these diesels normally last quite some time?

Yeah I'm actually really liking the 60 the more I research them. Great looks and and a classic interior. There is deffinately some sort of mystique with them, cant put my finger on it but now I really want one. If I get this one I think I would run it alongside the 80 once I get that. Would be the perfect garage. Dont think I'd ever buy another vehicle... just run 'em till the wheels fall off, then put on new wheels and run 'em again.

A good diesel 60 gets easy over 10 grand in Canada. I seen decent ones going for up to 15k. yes there are lots around 5-7k and they are in all different conditions. Try the buy and sell for Calgary and Vancouver. as well canadatrader.com the best ones are out west. unless someone took really good care of it. Ontario is a killer on metal.

rebuilds might cost just as much as a jdm engine. and you don't have the turbo. And if they say seized I am not sure what you will find. Broken rod?? or something really nasty.

If you end up with 7k tied up into it I am pretty sure you will be able to see it for that. One of the only few vehilcles that doesn't drop in value. they are at the bottom and get some form of genre or special interest extra value added to them. They will not drop.

A 80 willl drop in value a bit more. then they will hold out. But JDM models should hold pretty good.

Its all in the condition. A heavy wheeled rig with half smashed doors will definately have less value. but not to the owner :)

lets us know if you buy it.

I want to know WHY you cant import an HDJ-80 until 2008? In you're in Canada there are many of them coming in in a month or so.

Wayne-O- has some coming in soon.

I may be surplussing a very clean 2H in the next few months depending on which Turbo route I go.... email longnow@gmail.com if interested.

Thanks for the great Info. I dont know anything about this cruiser yet except for what my friend told me, I'll be going to look at it soon to find out if this is even worth my effort. How difficult is it to swap the engine? I'm still at the novice end of the mechanical scale, but I'd like to learn more. Maybe I can get someone to help me...

The cruiser is in Calgary so it shouldn't be the typical northern ontario rust bucket hopefully. I work as a pilot so my location can be confusing but I have places to stay in both Sault Ste Marie (ON), Calgary (AB), Vancouver (BC), and Mill Bay (BC).

I'm would be trying to do this on the cheap as much as possible for the short term as I want to pay off all my debts so that I dont have to spend a pile in interest. Need to save up some cash to import an HDJ as well, so $ will still be at a premium. Short term pain for long term gain I guess.

Sorry I should have been more specific... I want to import a 5-Speed HDJ-80 with FR/RR Lockers, which the great people on this board have informed me weren't avaliable untill 1993 if I'm not mistaken :)

Well you learn something new everyday. Were HDJ81s avaliable in LHD? Whats teh difference between an HDJ81 and an HDJ80?

as far as i have been able to figure the 81 is JDM only. the 80 is available in LHD in ither parts of the world...
cheers

Cool thanks... looks like I'm waiting till 2008 still then :)

Ocelot, where are you a pliot at? I am an AME.

Calgary is good for lower rust on vehicles.

Is the HDJ80 your waiting for not coming from Japan? Cause those are all RHD.

Ask Wayne-O, dont spend your life avoiding RHD.

You'll be missing out because of it. I drove Sheldons HJ61 and the only thing I had to get used to was the shift pattern (left hand), and the turn signal switch.

I work for Central North... based out of Sudbury :)

I'd like to get a LHD 5-Speed Full-Time 4WD 3xLocked HDJ-80... so probably coming from europe or central america. I haven't really researched it all that much yet.

Yeah I know its not that big of deal... but its just not my cup of tea ;)

So how hard would this engine swap be? Sorry to ask such a retarded n00b question but I've never attempted something quite that hard. How long does it usually take? What is involved? I'm just trying to get a better picture of what I may or may not be getting myself into.

I've been surfing the cool cruisers of texas page... man these FJ60s look great when restored. It'd be nice to eventually restore a rig to that condition, makes me grin just thinking about it :D

Thanks again!

How do you know unless you try. JDM trucks are almost always in awesome shape. Come with all the goodies

If you're holding out for a nice HDJ80 in LHD, then Europe is your only option, those coming out of Central America are bound to be *hammered*. I just spent a month in Panama and while you do come across some clean 80's, the vast majority of them show their age, they get much heavier use and see much worst conditions than European trucks.

The thing that makes the JDM trucks so enticing, despite the RHD factor, is how many clean specimens have been found. This is a rare ocurrence in other Land Cruiser markets across the world that received desirable Land Cruiser models.

Buy some French 4x4 magazines and start looking at those options.

If I remember correctly the ONLY HDJ-80 in the United States was that unit Drexxer got. That was brought in from Belgium as I remember. NIce unit fo sho.

Hi everybody!

Ocelot, cruisers in france are overrated, the prices are real high! Germany is cheaper, as well as belgium, but often you see rust buckets from germany and in belgium, they love to fidle with the tacho! As for, changing the engine, 60>60, i'd say 15 to 20 hours maximum. That is if you have the tools! I can have BJ 7 series quite cheap, but they're in a bad shape compared to what comes from japan, thought not as bad as canadian mine trucks!

Best regards.

Max.
