I've been skulking around the pages of Mud for awhile and thought I might post and show my progress.

I received the car off the old man for nothing, with the understanding that I look after it. that was an understatement.
here is a few pics of the neglected old girl. I was moving from Adelaide to Perth and driving the Nullabor in a months time. My partners Dad helped me replace the windscreen and taught me some panel work. needless to say, I was hooked.

20170401_144038.jpg

windscreen just crumbled apart.
20170401_144728.jpg

20170401_175022.jpg

big holes. all cut out and replaced with fresh metal

20170504_065700.jpg

And so the adventure begins

20170401_144038.jpg

2900 odd Kms and 806 L of Diesel later and we drive into Perth.

Decided that the old bull bar will have to be upgraded to a winch bar.

20171024_124429.jpg

After a 2.5'' old man emu suspension lift
20171119_134437.jpg

found a second hand ARB bar for $400. cleaned up pretty well, new coat of gloss black
20171129_123418.jpg

add an ebay roller fairlead and a cheap winch.

This is pretty much going to be a refurb, one panel at a time.

I drove it to place that does sand blasting. 4 bolts later, pulled the bonnet off and blasted it.
20171122_123507.jpg

there really is no replacement for blasting, you find all sorts hiding under the rust
20171122_153204.jpg

20171122_162142.jpg

Gassless mig. gross welds.
20171124_163942.jpg

new paint and sound deadner sheets

Diving deeper into the rust repair. Ripped out the carpet to replace the body deadner sheets. shes noisy on the road at 100km/h
20171129_144115.jpg

passenger foot well had a couple of holes.
20171129_150329.jpg

And so did the drivers... the old sound deadner held water and dust. which in turn bred rust.
20171129_152853.jpg

fibreglass and etch prime.
20171129_164649.jpg

I may have gone overboard.

Started to get serious.
pulled the rear windows out to replace the seals and tint the glass.
20171205_173244.jpg

Step 1 pull off the covers
20171205_173428.jpg

Step 2 Run a blade in between the pane and fibreglass to break the seal.
20171205_174239.jpg

Gently pry the windows out
20171205_174255.jpg

don't drop them
20171205_174626.jpg

dont go OCD, your going to put more mastic sealant back on later. dissolves in turps by the way.

20171205_175259.jpg

remove the top screw before attempting to remove the glass
push the glass into the middle, feet on the lower section and gently pull the frame upward. you can tilt the top of the glass panes out.
20171205_181045.jpg

little rubber wedges go under, when you reassemble.
20171205_182139.jpg

the dividers clean up with mineral turpentine. rubbers point forwards in the car
20171206_122859.jpg

sand blast to find the hidden horrors.
20171206_130704.jpg

fibreglass, sand, etch and paint

Next up was an easy project. replacing the rear cards. 2mm sheet Aluminium from a sheet metal place for off cuts.
20171208_135315.jpg

used the old Crud as a template. don't even bother with the single use push clips. use Nutserts.
20171208_151330.jpg

use some thick felt to replace the feel from the old foam that has tuned to dust.
20171208_124823.jpg

sound deadner sheets for mass.

Next project. the rear doors
20191021_120504.jpg

20191021_120800.jpg

heavily rusted around the tail light. Ill leave this for when I do the body. Didn't want to take too much on at the same time
20191021_120859.jpg

rust is pretty bad from the seals
20191021_152737.jpg

Sand blasting reveals the true extent.
20191106_085623.jpg

filler and square up the flats.

Brake booster upgrade time!

20180908_115833.jpg
20180908_115830.jpg

Replaced with the 80 series duel diaphragm model,4 bolt version
20180908_124124.jpg

fits like a dream. good half hour job replacing it with the right parts.- think it was an M8 coupling nut x 1.25 thread

while I'm doing the brake upgrades,
new calipers! might as well paint them with high temp paint while they are clean.
20181022_153543-jpg.2366957

New LSPV off ebay- 75 bucks

this is the old one, rubber boot traps water and the whole this seized.
20181022_153532.jpg

Bled the brakes starting from the furthest line- rear left hand, rear right hand, LSPV, LHS and finally RHS. she lock up on pavement now.

Front doors!
Iv'e had all this done for quite some time, just been lazy posting.
20190110_174443.jpg

did the drivers side 1st over a few weeks off work. big holes where they meet the firewall. Again, windscreen let water in and bred rust.
20190114_101334.jpg

sand blaster has paid for itself. nothing is able to hide.

20190114_102400.jpg

20190114_111258.jpg

Bit of glav sheet metal offcuts. prime between the layers before you weld it up.
20190114_155020.jpg

this is why she whistles over 80km/h. Saved the rubbers, they cleaned up with turps. ordered new metal inserts from Megazip.

20190202_164346.jpg

And onto the paint and panel work. Buy yourself some proper guide coat! I wasted a few cans of rattle can black before hand. helps you find all the lows and highs to sand flat.
20190204_161829.jpg

pretty happy with the paint job.
20190223_170056.jpg

next up replacing door cards.
20190224_111142.jpg

Nutserts in the old holes, and M5 hex heads. pretty happy with how they came up.
20190506_162608.jpg

and repeat for the other side.

20190630_132440.jpg

After a run up in the hills, came home and let her sit. walked out to this the next day! not impressed.
20190702_141532.jpg

20190702_143228.jpg

as it turns out, the rear output shaft seal had let go. gear oil everywhere. After a trip to Bursons auto parts, it was time to drop the oils on the trans case/box and diff. might as well rebuild the knuckles at the same time.
20190712_162513.jpg

Buy a big pack of nitrile gloves. all the advice I can give you.
20190712_162522.jpg

Some pitting occurred behind the shaft seal. all clean up and new seals.

took me a couple of half days each side, going at my own pace. never been up to the elbows like this before so a bit of consulting the OEM manual was needed.
20190702_143528.jpg

went from this
20190715_120716.jpg

to this. All new wheel bearings, hanger bearings and seals. even painted the rotor guards at the same time.
20190714_115805.jpg

couple of small jobs happened in between projects.
20190911_183344.jpg

replaced all the old globes to LED. the indicators now blind you at night.
20190925_121353.jpg

highly recommend RAM mounts

Rear door cards are a bit sad too.
20200320_145237.jpg

this time I went with new vinyl.
20200320_145423.jpg

M5 nutserts in all the old mounting holes.
20200320_152329.jpg

20200328_140052.jpg

preferred the wrapped look rather then sheet metal Aluminium.
20200326_144535.jpg

And to get fancy, a drop down table for camping and fishing
20200326_165553.jpg

20200328_140025.jpg
