There is folklore occasionally promulgated on this forum (sadly) that to get the manifolds to seal, even when the ears are different thicknesses, it's only a matter of torking down the bolts hard enough.
The bolt breaks off in the head or sometimes pulls the threads outta the head before the manifold magically gets sealed, because physics.

What?!... Nonsense! That whole science and logic thing has been debunked!

Got that bolt out of the head. Had taken me about an hour to get it out, fabricating drill bits to fit dead on to the bolt with a right angle drill attachment stuffed way back in there. Between that an a crap load of patience, it came out with out a problem!

Thank you! I was sweating bullets but it came out smoothly and relatively fast with out much problems. Now to get the gaskets and get this thing back together after I get the manifold buttoned up. Hopefully she won't be backfiring after this and all the new vacuum lines redone.

What's the fms on the carburetor? Waiting on parts/gaskets and then I'll put her back together. Crossing my fingers I fixed the backfire! Just need to make sure my carb is adjusted correctly and put everything back together. Also if someone has a good diagram of the vac lines and where they need to go so I can double check my work off a different diagram. I live in California so no de smog unfortunately.

Found the last time it was smogged was in 2006,
Can any explain to me these numbers? I have a general idea what they are just don't know what they are telling me is the problem. The shop did tell me to rebuild the carb because of it running rich it destroyed my Cat. Can anyone put me in contact with reliable source? I've seen some names on previous threads but vaguely remember.
Thanks!

Just saw you're in Ojai, if you ever need a hand working on the cruiser, I'm in Ventura/Oxnard.

Dead cat is a definite possibility. If the truck was running super rich/high idle to compensate for idle issues, that could lead to failing cat.

Best place to start is lean drop on the carb and confirm no vac leaks when idle is setup. Then start looking into egr/air pump/cat.

Totally! Glad to see there's someone close by on here. I'll definitely keep that in mind. Maybe once it's all done in said we can do some trailing up the 33!

For sure, I just drove out to Pine Mountain on Saturday, the campground is closed up with a lot of snow, hopefully it opens back up soon. Also need to find out when Miller Jeep Trail opens.
