This is the first Cruiser @Godwin bought (even before the red one) about 30 years ago. It’s also my first Cruiser.

@cruiserinsanity and I did a rear axle swap on the '85 today. The diff currently under it has slop in the pinion bearing and the parking brake is frozen. The extra rear axle is one that I had been running under my '86 FJ60 until I did the 80 series FF axle. The diff is good, and 4.11 like the '85 has but the brakes will need to be rebuilt. One drum was full of rust and put up a good fight before coming. Rear bearings and axle seals had been replaced in the year prior to the axle being pulled from the '86 so those are good. It was a full day swapping over the axles.

Over the next several weeks we are going to pull out the 3FE/H42. The 3FE will be resealed and a rebuilt head installed as well as the H42 being replaced with a well used H55F. The 34mm transfer case will be rebuilt as well as a resurfaced flywheel and new clutch kit installed.

I will update the thread as we make progress.

Alright. I’m tuned in.

You will like the H55F. If you could find a good used 62 T-case, you will be happy too.

More progress on the rear axle today. Drum backing plates were pulled and replaced with less rusty specimens pulled from the parts stash.

While the axle shafts were out the axle seals were replaced with OEM part no. 90311-47001.

The diff cover was resealed using a cork gasket and gear oil resistant Toyota FIPG.

Advics brake cylinders were placed on the backing plates and we will install the shoes next weekend.

Was the new rear axle a FF?

Today I pulled out the driveshafts and skidplate from the 60.

Found an insect nest developing on top of one. The condenser, radiator, grill, and headlight bezels all came off. Tomorrow we’ll pull the bull bar.

Parts are starting to pile up in front of the 40.

Dang.

It’s not too bad of a job on these. I find pulling the transmission is harder than the engine.

Was there lots of oil leaks when the engine was installed?

On the stand, after many struggles involving a hoist, a come along, and a trailer to get it moved from the staging area to under the shed. Side note, the bellhousing bolts from a 1FZ (the last engine on this stand) are a different thread than the 3FE.
