Hi folks, we need your help:
a German friend of mine asked me if I can sell him a FJ45 tub (1983 vintage) I have for his 1978 FJ45 pickup.
Do they are compatible, or there are fitment issues?
If they're not compatible, does it is worth the hassle/trouble, given that original tubs are very scarce in Europe and the Chinese do not offer early model pickup tubs? 🤔

Your contribution is highly appreciated!

The last tub 1983/1984 will be different because of rhe dash and there is a little difference in the floor in front of the seats

Do you mean the pickup bed or lower cab? The bed should be pretty sweet as there were never any rear chassis changes but if you’re sending him a lower cab then there’ll be fitment issues. They changed the mounting points on both cab and chassis when the fuel tank went under the cab on 01/1979.

Thank you, actually I mean the lower cab...

PS. Nice to hear that a late (post 1979) model bed/tray does not really have fitment issues!

Hello,I'm the friend from germany.
I'm restoring a '78 FJ45 pick-up and need a cabin,or rather a tub.
As already mentioned,is it feasible to build a tub with a tank under the car on a frame for a tub with a tank under the passenger seat ?
Or would too much have to be changed and everything would end in a catastrophe ?

Thank you in advance and greetings from rainy cold germany,

Jürgen

Hey mate,

I just did a 10 min google search on my phone for the chassis differences but couldn’t find much. Need a computer for best results. There are differences though. They are minor and very likely not insurmountable but if you’re shipping the tub that far you may as well get the right one. Don’t want to get all the way there and need extensive reworks just to get it to fit.

Have you tried Mr. Landcruiser near Brisbane, Qld? He’s a friend of mine and may have the tub you need.

It seems that our friend Jürgen has already spotted a good early model tub locally (imported from Australia)...
In that case does he have (in respect to the tub only) an easy task doing the swap from RHD to LHD (instruments, steering column etc)?

Welcome to Mud Jürgen! :flipoff2:
What about to upload some pics of your splendid FJ45, especially your tub?

PS. You know here we love pics. Otherwise you can get messages like this: "pics man, or your story did not happen/is just fiction", Lol!

According to when I asked the same question, the rear frame mounts are different.
Obviously, gas tank, seat mounts, and parking brake handle are different as well

To swap from RHD to LHD it’s easiest to find a good donor cowl and exchange them at the factory seem. That is what I did with my 78’. Be sure to get the LHD petal assembly, they do not interchange. The windshield frame will need to be changed as well.

Thank you Michael!
A complete LHD FJ45 is on hand. Just the tub is rusted out and the only good one locally available is a RHD, that's why the swap in question.

Hard to add value without any pics but perhaps you could use the firewall and dash from the LHD tub as donor parts for the RHD one.

Also, if you can put the two tubs side by side you should be able to see any mounting issues? One is an early tub and one is late?

The tub that Jürgen spotted locally is a early (Aussie import/RHD) tub too.

Sorry Jürgen, I was very optimistic and misunderstood, Lol!
So you start from Tabula rasa...

I think I'll take the tub I get from Belgium.
The tub is from a right-hand drive, but the I'll convert it to left-hand drive.
I'm going to get a bulkhead and a dashboard from a left-hand drive car and convert it.
I think that's easier than converting a tub with a tank under the car,or messing it up...🫣🫣
