1982 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser 4X4

Owner has supplied the following info:

Pictures at: Flickr: emorth's Photostream

Rust - lots of questions about rust. Yes, there is rust. Any FJ40 of this vintage that did not live its entire life in the desert has rust - an unfortunate fact of life. The significant rust spots are the driver's and passenger's floor pans. See photos. Replacement floor pans are available and it is not a difficult (AKA expensive) process to replace them. The rear tub is in good shape. The bottom of passenger's door has some rust - see photo, the driver's door is in good shape - see photo. The ambulance doors and sides are also in good shape. They are in my garage. I will have to move a bunch of stuff so I can get to them to take pictures. The roof and liner are also in good shape. The frame is in good shape.

Engine and drive train: 2F 6 cylinder engine, starts every time, even if it has been sitting for a while. 4 speed transmission. Locking front Aisin hubs. 109K miles. I don't know when/if the clutch was replaced. It doesn't slip or chatter. Runs great. Engine & drive train are sound. Transmission shifts easily and smoothly. No funny noises.

Tires: Need to be replaced

Power steering and air conditioning: No & no.

MPG: I don't know. I drove it for fun. Didn't pay attention to the gas - didn't care. I think they get around 10 - 12 MPG???

Purchase date: I purchased it in August of 2005. I am at least the third owner. I suspect there were more.

Color: Red appears to be the original color. There is no indication of another color under the red. I don't know if the current red is Toyota or aftermaket red.

Glass: All of the glass is good. Windshield is new and OEM.

Off-Roading: I have not done any serious off roading with it. I have not abused it. It has done one trail ride in the GW forest that I could have done in my stock, soccer-mom SUV. My plan was to drive it on the Outer Banks of NC. That never happened. Last year it was my daily (20 miles round trip) drive. Worked great even when it was really cold.

Original equip: I believe the tub, engine and drive train are original. No reason to suspect otherwise.

Experience: This is the only 40 I have ever owned. I have owned other antique and new 4X4 vehicles. I am an engineer and understand automotive mechanical and electrical systems. I am familiar with other Land Cruisers through the Capitol Land Cruiser Club. Capital Land Cruiser Club

I would prefer not to sell it. It is a fun vehicle! But, I would like to have an FJ-80 and I can't justify two hobby cars.

The photo at: http://www.capitallandcruiserclub.org/photos/images/DSC02541.jpg was taken in Aug '05 as I was buying it.

My opinion only, but the price seems high to me for that much rust.

Floor pans are shot and the bottom of the passenger door is bad, but $5500???? If the pans were replaced and the door repaired I would think this would be a $15k truck. No?

no ..prob not a 10 k truck. Where are you living ? I used to live in Avon. If you are gonna take a look at it I dont mind a ride.
FYI there is a nice early model 40 on craigslist in Suffolk

Let me know where I can find a museum quality 40 for $15k, I'll take two of them.

Thank you

No doubt that 55 is a screaming steal. I'm actually neck deep in restoring my 78' 55 and have more than twice that in mine. I guess I'm just being inpatient....Looking hard for a nice close to stock 78' or later red 40.

No way Id buy it without seeing that frame and tub in detail. At that price it needs to be very nice, or the insurance co. wont insure it for anything close to that....fighting with progressive ins. now. MIke

What my cousin said. ^^^

I own an '82 and just completed replacing the floor pans and repairing rusty doors, among other areas. Unless you have the skills and equipment to do it yourself, that's a relatively expensive proposition. If there's no rust hidden in other locations, and don't assume there isn't, that's probably a $7-8K truck where I live.

Hey guys, I owned this truck a few years ago. Anyone seriously interested can pm me or email and I'll be glad to provide some unbiased feedback.

That 40 is lifted, has replaced seats, etc. May not be as "stock" as the seller says. I owned a 7/77 FJ40 in Freeborn Red (loved it), but most people go for the late model 40's for the factory PS and A/C.

I am with other posters here and know that tub replacement is neither cheap or easy (unless you have the skills, in which case it is cheaper and still not easy). Foot tub might be more easy, but I wouldn't know.

Offer him $7500 and see what happens. I am in agreement with others here that you should be able to find something nicer, more "stock", for less than $10750.

Rust should be a large bargining point with price. If you factored in how much it would cost you to pay someone to replace the tub, I think somewhere in the $6000-7000 range (+3500) would put you right around his asking price...

you're not looking hard enough then. Anyone asking $20k+ is really hoping for $15k. I've seen very clean trucks for less than $10k with zero rust.

it's not a 40 but this is what's on this forum alone....https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-trailers-sale-wanted/412097-restored-1973-fj55.html

hey guys, jumping out of lurk mode as I quietly look for my next Cruiser, but I thought since I DID sell a VERY nice truck on this board not too too long ago, I might shed some light on the market. IN the 30 months or so since i sold my truck, the market has tanked and then improved, so YMMV.

Anyway, FWIW, I did a frame off resto on my 77. took 3 years. OME lift, 33.9.50 BFG's on stock rims. It was meant took stock but perform as new. It did. When it was completed, there was no rust. ZERO. All new metal, toyota power steering, the works. IPOR did most of the work besides the motor rebuild, which i did (head decked, Jim C. carb, electronic ignition (again, Toyota) headers, custom STAINLESS exhaust, etc). New carpets, new seats, tufty, Hard and soft tops and doors. you name it, it was either new or replaced. And brand new paint at terrific expense. All tolled i had about $37k into the truck. I owned it 7 years. When I sold it, the truck was just exactly what you
d expect from a year old restoration. Close to perfect. Oh, and I DID drive it to the OBX and back - twice. At 80MPH.

Bottom line: I sold it for $16,500. Both parties got a good deal. so you know, I started out asking $22k, i think.

Sooo, I'm not going to tell you you're asking too much, but i will tell you that it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. These are awesome trucks, no doubt. And there are people who will pay those prices, but it's got to show well. So, i wish you luck!

Back to my cave. As we used to say, Nomex on, flame away. :)

Much better off to buy a restored truck in this market or one with no rust or one covered with bondo and a new.... paint job. 2 cents Mike

Run from the rust!!!!!! There are others out there in much better condition for a lot less money.

I learned a hard lesson when I purchased my first rust bucket off emotion!!! I wish I knew about mud so I could have saved a few dollars.

Get pics of the frame and everything underneath.

Good luck with your search (post in classified what you want to buy it's a great start)
