Yeah I don't know how accurate the app is. It was slow to register sometimes. There were a couple of times when it showed about 10 mph diff. I think it just feels like you're going much faster in that truck since its so sketchy on the road.

Flanges!
I was talking to a fellow MUDder about getting some driveshafts from him so I can swap the W56 trans I have into the mini. It seems that different year models/generations have different bolt patterns on the input/output flanges. So my question is, can I pull my top shift case and just swap the flanges onto the forward shift case that's on the W56? I'm just thinking of a way to be able to swap the W56 with the forward shift into the truck now so I can have both top shift cases out in anticipation of the dual cases. Also, then I will have a sweet 5 speed instead of the junky 4 speed. However, it seems that it might not be that easy...

I didn't have any issues with swapping the flanges when I put in the w56 to replace my g52.

So you did swap flanges? My only other issue is drive shaft length. The W trans is about 4 inches longer.
I used the top shift case from an '81 complete and modified my forward shift for the front box. The flanges from my g52 bolted right up to the '81 transfer case.

My crew chief pulled the truck in earlier and checked the timing and fixed my homemade hood popper. We also took the sway bar off the front. Having it on the lift you could really see where it was limiting the travel. Some new longer travel shocks would also help but I'm not getting into that can of worms until I'm ready to tackle the suspension. That being said, it's really not the suspension that I'm worried about. It's the gears, tires, etc that I will need to buy when I do the suspension. So I'll just keep getting beat up on the trail for a while.
So the list of things to do currently are:
1. Build a fan shroud. I ordered a sheet of metal from a guy today and we are going to cut/bend/weld something that resembles a fan shroud. Hopefully it will help keep the temps down.
2. Block off the unused A/C ports. The defrost vent port and the upper center vents will not be used. So I'm just going to block them off.
3. Install radio. Gotta have my tunes!!!
There are a couple of rides coming up that I am going to. Durhamtown on the 8th of September, and the ACC invitational on November 2nd-4th. I'm kicking around the idea of ordering some tube and building a front bumper but I think I need to wait until I buy a winch. That way I can build the bumper to accomodate the winch and not have to go back and redo anything.

Ok. So the speakers are installed and wiring is ran. I need to put connectors on the wires on the speaker side and tap into the radio plug on the harness. Guess what? The main radio plug on a 1987 4Runner and a 2010 (maybe an 11?) Scion xB are the SAME. It plugged straight in. The one for the rear speakers is different but I don't have rear speakers so.. We also made a fan shroud. When I say we, I mean my crew chief Matt. He's helped me a bunch on the truck. I will say it is not the prettiest but it should pull WAY more air than it did before and hopefully help to keep the temps from getting too high. I didn't get any pics of the build process but I'll snap a couple when I pull the truck in later. We are also planning to pull it back out and either paint it or spray it with the same bedliner in a can that we used on the floor inside the truck. Only 2 more days until the 2nd shakedown run!!!
When you say paint, you mean the interior or the whole thing? My vote for exterior is to stay tan and white. Classic.

No I just meant to paint the fan shroud. We've already painted the truck.
pics of the scion radio install and wiring please.....i need a new with ipod connectivity eventually...doesnt the scion radio have that??

The main wiring for the radio (power, ground, acc, front speakers, etc) is the same as the one on the Runner. I just plugged it straight in. The wire colors on the speakers (if you need to splice them in, which I had to since I didn't have any speakers to start with) are pink/purple and green/blue. I'll snap a few pics when I get out there later. I have them temporarily spliced right now just so I could make sure it works.
All of the Scions have iPod connectivity from the factory. The problem is, they have a special USB cable connection on the back of the radio. It connects to a cable (part of a harness) that goes to a USB port in the center console. That also has a special connector. Then it is just a regular USB connection to the iPod. So, in order to have the iPod work you either have to have all the cables, and the USB port, or figure out some other way to connect the iPod. If you actually bought all the stuff to have the "factory" connection I feel like it's pricing itself out. You could likely buy an off the shelf iPod kit that would be cheaper. HOWEVER, if you DO have all the factory stuff, you can control the iPod from the radio and it displays the song info and all that jazz. Which is pretty cool.
There are numerous Scion radio part numbers. The only one I have personally sold is the "base" radio for the newer models. Part # is PT546-00111, retail price $264.00. The one I have is the "premium" audio. Part # PT545-00111, retail is $710.00. I got mine for free because someone broke the screen (it's touch screen, or rather, used to be) and they had to pay for a replacement. We were just going to trash it so I took it home and disassembled it. Took out the broken, non-funtional touch screen, and voila! So it works but there are a lot of funtions you can't access since the touch screen no longer works.
Also, a side note. My install doesn't really look like anything because my dash is pretty incomplete. The way it's going in there now is just bolting into a big empty spot. I think that you could make the install look a little cleaner in a 4Runner. The first gen mini has a very small space for the radio so it wouldn't fit if you had the full dash.
sweet. if you get a chance can you get some size measurements of the radio? lenght, width, height, so we can see if it will fit in the stock hole...without too much modification...and if it will be deep enough cause the heater core is right behind it.

Probably going to have to be after this weekend to get the measurements on the radio. It's mostly installed already and I don't think I'm going to have time to pull it back out.
