Anybody have any experience with electric fans on the 22RE? Will the "Taurus" fan work? I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do. The mechanical fan I have in there is much closer to the radiator. There was no way to use the original shroud. It was hitting the a/c compressor and wasn't really lined up with the fan correctly. Anyway, I'm thinking either a. remove the mechanical fan and run a big electric (will still need to figure out some kind of shroud) or b. run 1 or 2 small electric pusher fans on the condenser. The pusher fans will supply enough cooling (I think) but space is limited. Everything is already pretty crammed in there. Any opinions or experiences welcomed.
 
i have never been a fan of the taurus fan mod..it draws and un godly amount of current on startup.

i would do everything i could to get a mechanical fan in there if it were me...
got any pics of the space we are workin in here?

maybe machine up a short hub to mount with??

Let me clarify, I have the mechanical fan in there now. It works fine and I even ran the truck last weekend like that (mechaincal fan with no shroud). Even though the temps were in the high 90s it didn't over heat on me. It did creep up a little but never go past halfway. What I'm worried about is going out on a long ride and running the a/c and it's going to overheat. I'll try to snap some pics this weekend. I think the fan itself will clear if the shroud is right. The problem is more in the accessories. Like the a/c comp is sticking at least an inch into the space where the shroud needs to be. I would have to make a slim (very slim) fan shroud to just run it as is. Which I guess we can call possibility c.
 
Also, we put the TG mounts in... everything everyone has ever said about them is true. At about 2000 RPM they will literally shake the fillings out of your teeth. It also doesn't help that my Marlin HD clutch chatters when it engages some times. Just extra shaky-ness! Woo!
 
Don't most electric fans come with a shroud? Someone correct me but the shroud's primary job is to direct the air thru the radiator and associated coolers, and that sends the hot air back onto the motor, so if you can't find a single fan to cover the radiator, two smaller fans would work. The Toyota rads are so small anyway I would think a good fan from summit or the like should get you good coverage at a decent price.
 
The problem I've seen mentioned allot is the aftermarket fan makers don't push enough air. The Taurus fan is one of the few that has the needed air volume.

When was the last time you changed the fan clutch oil? Maybe refreshing it or going to a thicker one is all that is needed.

They do but nothing like the factory one. There will still be a big gap all around. The make conversion kits but I don't want to spend 300+ at LCE...

Yeah that's why I was wondering about the Taurus fan. I have no idea when or if the clutch oil has ever been changed. The engine is brand new to me with 238k on it. I have no idea what the history is. Based on the fact that the plug wires are about 16 yrs old I kinda doubt it has been changed.
 
That and unless the owner was a yota head, chances are it is original since the fan clutch is technically a non-serviceable item. The only reason I knew about it was from seeing it here on MUD. Seems easy enough, just have to be careful of the O-ring. Check over in the 80 section, I think there is a thread close to the top about a blue hub mod that may talk about how to crack one open. You can also search fan clutch mod, Landtank I think, has a good thread on tweaking the fan clutch.

Yeah I'm very familiar. Everybody that calls and orders a fan clutch asks me about it. I might see about changing the oil in it. I think the clutch is probably ok though. It would have been running much hotter if the clutch was bad and there was no shroud.
 
I'm bringing the truck home this weekend. I'm going to start messing with trying to get the ducts for the AC worked out and get the dash back together somewhat.
 
Made some progress on the ducts. I got the outside vents ran and connected to the box. Passenger side is already in and hooked up, driver's side is ran but I haven't put the vent in yet. Not sure what I'm going to do with the center vents. The first gen had the vents in the center at the bottom of the box and the Runner has them in the top right where my radio and A/C controls need to go. I might see if I can get some sort of flexible hose or something and route it down under the dash. Bottom line, if I have to I will just block them off and only use the outside ones. I also fixed the e-brake (wasn't bolted to the dash, only the firewall), bolted down the computer, bolted down the fuse block, bolted my "hood release" back in, and a couple other misc things.
 
No progress this week. It's been raining every day when I get home (I don't have a garage currently) and I've been spending time with the :princess: when I get home. This weekend I'm going to try to pick up some parts a pull-a-part. Looking for A/C controls, A/C switch (on/off, apparently won't work without it), some different A/C lines (going to try to run a pickup condenser instead of the double type from the Runner), and possibly some A/C vents to try to work something out for the center vents. I'm also going to try to get the ducts finished on Sunday, install the speedo cable from the Runner (not sure if it's good or not), and get the radio and GPS wired back up. I also need to wire the horn and wiper motor.

Take some cotton swabs along, and check the insides of the AC lines. Any blackness, reject them. Google "air conditioner black death" without the quotes.

Noted. I didn't go this weekend so it will probably be a couple weeks bofore I go. I'm going to bring the truck back up to work so I can change the rubber clutch line (only thing I haven't changed) and a few other things.
 
Well, I finished one vent, and replaced the speedo cable. I'm going to drive the truck back up to work tomorrow. A lot more work seems to get done when it's up there. Funny thing about the speedo. I just took a little test drive up to the store and I was in 4th at about 2500 rpm and it said I was going 30... I kinda figured it was going to be off but I might as well not even have it. :banana:
 
Wow, that seems waayy off. Are you on stock gears? I am sure that is in here somewhere but I am too lazy to look. That 4th at 2500 in mine is around 45-50 I think.

22RE and cluster is out of an auto 87 4Runner, I have 33x12.50s, a 4 speed piece of junk trans, and stock gears (4.10s I think), so yeah... I think it's a little off. I was going to try to hook up my Garmin out of my Tundra but I realized I don't have a cig lighter hooked up in the mini. I had a janky aftermarket one before but I couldn't get it to work. Oh well, it's not like I can go fast enough to get a ticket...
