Hey Fellas,

Been lurking a while, on the look out for a project FJ40. I appreciate all the feedback this forums provides. I’m looking to add a long term project car that I can work on with my family.

I have a line on a 76, and was hoping to get some feedback.

Here’s the link to pics

I don’t have all the info yet, will update if the FJ isn’t a hard no.

In CA, asking south of 3k. I asked about the frame, getting it drivable short distances, and if he planned on patching or replacing the tub, got this response back.

“I will take a better look at the frame in the morning and let you know... in order to get it to be drivable the gas tank will need to be flushed along with the fuel lines put new tires on it and check the brakes. It has been sitting a very long time but when we went to start it we poured gas into the carb and within 3 cracks it fired right up and idled. I have not thought about what I would do as far as repairs if I were keeping it but I would repair as much as I could on your own opposed from replacing the tub.”

Looking for any and all feedback on this particular FJ, price point, deal killers, ect....hoping to get the time to check it out in person.

Mostly looking for something to make reliable, presentable, drive around town, and pass to the kids.

I’m an electro mechanical tech by trade, but I know my limits and will shop out what needs to be shopped out.

Thanks everyone

Remember that a '76 requires SMOG cert for CA registration.
Rounding up some of those original emission parts can be a challenge.
Just another thing to consider.

Agree with above comments. Frame is key. Of frame is solid then price seems like a great entry point. Though expensive there is a company called aqualu that makes aluminum tubs, cowls etc so you could skip the welding if it’s extensive and drop all new on the chassis once ready.

I think for a a few dollars more could save months off the rebuild, but probably double the dollars.. if 3k is the budget then it's worth it

Looks great buy it, otherwise keep it as parts truck for the next one
