Decided to start this thread to document the progress on my latest acquisition. I grew up in a Landcruiser household. Built a 73’ FJ40 with 5.3LS/H55 when I was in high school and daily drove it throughout college. I enjoyed it for what it was but quickly outgrew it, so I sold it. Needed more room, bed space, and some towing capacity for the next stage of life. At the time, I had a friend in college was a fan of old Fords who grew my appreciation for them. I stumbled upon Highboy Crew Cabs and realized they met all my needs, so the hunt began.

It was quite the saga tracking one of these down, much different beast than a cruiser. These were work trucks that were typically beat hard and put away wet. The ones that are left are either rusty, going for outrageous money, or both. I lost several deals due to rude sellers, undisclosed issues, bondo specials, and buyers coming out from under me and offering double asking price at the final hour. Think mopar hype, but for a truck.

I met the seller when he posted about purchasing a white 76 highboy crew with 428/4 speed after several years. I messaged him and got his number. He wasn’t looking to sell but we worked out a price and agreed to buy it after seeing the truck on FaceTime. Wired funds and get a call later claiming he forgot to mention the engine has been knocking and front axle makes a noise on full lock. He says he doesn’t want to sell it to me in that condition and refunds me. Looking back, I think it was just sellers remorse, he was very attached to it.

Then I saw this truck posted on a Facebook group in southern Oregon. Another seller had posted that he was on the fence about selling so I reached out. Said he would think about it and took my number down. Reached out a month later, still not ready.

A month later, I get a call from the seller who backed out of our deal on the white 76 highboy. Says he bought another truck and wants to make it right with me after our last deal went sour. Turns out it was the same truck listed in southern Oregon. I get on FaceTime and inspect the truck, everything checked out. Sent the funds, got the title shipped, and sent transport.

Here is what I got:

-1975 Crew Cab Highboy (F26 chassis-Factory 4x4)
-All original paint (Sequoia Brown), just need an original paint 73-79 tailgate if someone has one
-360V8 w/ NP435 4-speed (Possibly 390, need to measure stroke)
-Dana 60 closed knuckle front and Dana 60 rear
-Factory power assist steering
-Minimal rust, cab is very clean, front pans were done as part of the purchase agreement (2 small spots under rear taillights from dirt getting kicked up over the years)
-Optioned with Orange Tape stripes (received an NOS set included in the deal)

I LOVE this generation of Ford trucks. When they were real trucks meant more for work than comfort and luxury. My only Ford at this time is my 1952 F3. Great find!

Ya no kidding, have had many offers to buy it already, but it’s NFS. That supercab is really clean, is that an X36 vin? What’s under the hood?

Yep, definitely from a great period, looking forward to putting this one back into service. I’m thinking I might need to add a bumpside crew to the fleet when my wallet recovers from this build. Love the F3s as well, one of my favorite grills of that era.

Very Cool, I will be following along !!
I grew up with these trucks and have been a Ford fan boy all my life 😲
It wasn't tell I found my 80 for a song that I became a Toyota fan.
I have owed quite a few dent sides including reg, super & crew cabs. Like the old story goes I wish I kept them all 😩
Even back in the Day the Crew Cabs were rare and sought after. Ford nailed it, who would have known that the Crew Cab short bed configuration would be the most popular of all time.
This truck is truly a gem !!
I can't wait to see what you do with it !!

Supercab has a 400 with C6! Camper Special, XLT Package, and Dana 60 rear with 410 limited and Heavy duty Dana 44 4300lbs, 4 inch lift. Truck order through Kansas and shipped to Cali. I bought it from Rustfree classics for a squeek, so dont think he knew what he had. 😘

Dude you got a 1 in a lifetime rig for I believe a good $. Dont let it go 😉.
What a peach. X26, with factory air, and camper special package. That sure is a tough find. No plans to let this one go. Part of the agreement I made with the PO was to build it to use as intended unlike the flippers who turn these trucks for a quick profit. I see this truck as a long term family hauler some day.

I was told the truck was running and driving, but I soon realized this was far from the truth. It ran terrible. I would get up to 10 mph and the carb would sputter, backfire, and buck the whole truck around the neighborhood. I could also see sediment in the fuel filters. I pulled the tank and fuel lines to clean them all out. Rinsed the tank out with some muriatic acid and neutralized it to kill any dormant rust.

I went through the Holley 4160 carb, ultrasonic cleaned it, and reassembled. Found out someone had RTV’d the metering block instead of using a proper gasket :bang:. I still have some fine tuning to do this weekend, chasing a small off idle hesitation, but it runs much smoother.

My truck came with the oddball low pinion closed knuckle dana 60 with drum brakes upfront. Parts are not easy to come by and there are no off the shelf disk brake conversion kits. I started looking on marketplace for a 78-79 f250 kingpin high pinion Dana 60. These axles are very sought after by off-road enthusiasts for ground clearance and ability to run 37-44 inch tires. This year range specifically is also a direct bolt on for a highboy. They command a premium, anywhere from 3k-3500 just for a core. I stumbled on a deal for one in OH, had to LTL ship it, but it was well worth the effort.

Seems you know a lot about these trucks already 😎
That indeed is a very sought after axle and very hard to find.
Another score!!

The other reason there popular is it’s very easy to do high steer by adding high steer arms to the upper king pins similar to how it’s done on mine trucks.

Well you keep the ram assist steering or go to the later style steering box ?

I would go later. That Ram assist always leaks. That's me though. Your truck do what ya want. Save your old parts, all of them 🤔🧐😉
This was my experience

The old ram assist system is definitely coming out, I’ve heard they are nothing but a problem, even after a rebuild. I‘m thinking about pulling a Prius EPS box from a junkyard and integrating it between the stock box and steering shaft. Should be able to turn 37s with my pinky.

Understand where ya coming from, but I would go with 78 79 setup with redhead steering gear 🤔🧐😉😘. More Retro than Prius ( which I know would handle it 😉) but redhead closer to stock🤔🧐😏😉. Or I could talk to someone or give contact info. He owns my 78 flatbed plow truck 🤔🧐😏😉

Yea I hear ya, I go back and forth, I might take you up on that later. Really debating notching into the front crossmember on this one. With the Prius unit you can adjust the level of assist, maintain the stock box, and get rid of the ps pump on the engine side. It’s all easily reversible if anyone wanted to go back to stock.
