Good progress.

I added “build” prefix for you.

Thank you Rigger!

I hope one of you can help. I have gathered parts to make two complete license plate brackets but there are some differences that I was unaware when I took them apart many moons ago and now that I am putting my 74 back together, I want the correct assembly on the 74. Notice the following in the pics:

  • One of the main brackets has slots where the light caps mount and the other does not.
  • One set of screws are 8mm and one set is Phillips.
  • The light caps have different mountings on the underside
  • One set of lenses are glass and one set is plastic.
Please help me figure out what goes with what to make a correct bracket for a 74.

My educated guess would be that the plastic would be a later model. I also would guess the hex would precede the fillister head (Philips head) bolts. As far as the slot goes, That would be a 50/50 shot for me. It's not really needed so I'd lean towards earlier.

I'm also just guessing that the spare mount is from a later truck. Like a'76 or '77...

Anyway, thanks for letting me play. I'll bet someone else will have the correct bracket and chime in.

Thanks Rainman. I share your thoughts. I wish I had paid better attention when I took them apart.

Look at it this way though, when you get it back together and mounted, no one but you will know if it's not total '74. I understand the attention to detail more than you know but this is really a minor detail when all is said and done.

Good luck with the whole deal.

They changed to the double bubble type in 3/74.

Rainman, I know what you are saying but these little details are an oddly fun pursuit for me. I can't help it. There are going to be several upgrades that are not correct for a 74 and a few parts that I could not source (yet) that will not be correct for a 74. Everything else will be as close to original as possible.

I found this thread: Rear License Plate Bracket Resto & Questions

It appears that the the following parts were assembled together: Plastic lenses, slotted bracket, hex head screws, and the caps with the wider mounting parts. I believe that this set up would be for a later model so the other combination will go on my truck.

You'll notice the last post in that link was mine. HA! I forgot I was a part of that thread til I got to the bottom.

I went to black on the lens cover because the truck I was restoring was a Dune Beige and black truck when done. No chrome anywhere. Ended up looking real nice. (2NDCHNC build)

I looked back at the thread and your 2NDCHNC thread and I assume your bracket was from a 77 so hex phillip screws and plastic lenses for the 77 seem to be correct.

Here is another question. I was priming the oil pump with a drill and sawed off screwdriver because the truck had not ran in 20 years. While priming, I noticed oil puddling on the ground and went to the other side of the engine and oil was running out of the block. I grabbed a spare oil sending unit (circled in yellow) and screwed it into the hole where the oil was leaking from. My questions are: Which on of the oil sending units are in the correct location and what goes into the second hole?

Spent some time with the orbital buffer and some McGuire’s polish. First and second images show the outside of one door that has been buffed next to the other untouched door. The last image shows the inside of one door next to the outside of the buffed door and how closed the paints match. I am very impressed how well it buffed out.

My 1974 has the oil sending unit where the unit circled in yellow is. My understanding is that is the location it should be in. It looks like I have a plug where your sending until circled in red is. Interestingly, that unit circled in red is a the water jacket level so I don’t know how it would be reading oil pressure.

Here’s a couple of pics of my block at the location where your red circle is:

MadMace, Thank you very much. That is helpful. The unit circled in red was in the block when I got it. I'll unscrew it tonight and see what happens.

I unscrewed the sending unit circle in red. It appears that it was not supposed to be there as the passageway does not look to be clean enough to have been active. I am going to leave it open for now. Thanks for you help.

Most of the red parts are getting buffed with Meguiar’s 83 and it is a long and slow process but I love the results. One of the areas that needs special attention is the underside of the hood. Most of the paint was there but there is rust and that rust has stained the paint making the rust look worse than it really is. I tried CLR and a scotch brite pad but found that it scratched the heck out of my paint and I wondered if CLR alone would remove the stains. I laid down some paper towels over the areas to be treated and then soaked the paper towels with CLR. I covered the paper towels with plastic wrap to keep the CLR from evaporating, left it for a few hours then cleaned it up. I am happy with the results.

Things have been moving kind of slow on the 40. Lots of little parts moving together but no real progress. One of the things I have been working on is my wiper assembly. I took it apart and tried every type of solvent I had to remove the old waxy grease. I am thinking it may be cosmoline but not sure. What did work is for me to boil the parts in an old pot (wedding present almost 28 years ago, don't tell my wife). The old grease rises to the top and can be spooned off. Parts came out pretty clean and only needed a household cleaner to get all clean.
