So I’ve got a 71 fj40 with sbc350. The oil pressure and water temp gauges aren’t working on it. How can I determine if it’s the gauges or the sensors on the motor itself. Also it has a silver speedo gauge that’s not correct for my year or is it?

I have 40/60 series nos gauges as well as complete clusters.

Pls inbox, if intrested.

The temp sending unit adapter you can use on your Chevota is Toyota P/N 90404-16160 (if still available), or McMaster Carr #9151K96.
For Oil sending unit you can merely use all 1/8"NPT fittings from your local parts store. You can screw metric Landcruiser sending unit into the 1/8"NPT threads (with thread sealant), but you can not screw 1/8"NPT threads into the Landcruiser engine.

Thanks I also have a painless harness does that make a difference? I didn’t do the install but bought it that way without the two gauges working. I’d love to get a Dakota setup but saving for that now so just want the stock gauges to work for the time being

This is your Sensor Union , and Correct Electrical Connector terminals & Correct OEM color coded Tracer strip wires colors schemes

The CHG would be an idiot light, therefore so would your OIL if your cluster was in original condition. Those gauges have been swapped out for gauges that match your rig’s year.

My understanding is those Chevy senders won't send correct signal to your OEM gauge. Never seen the adapter. Imagine it would have male SBC threads and female BSPT threads for the Toyota sender. You probably also saw where a couple guys said they used teflon tape and screwed the Toyota sender into the chevy block(even those the threads are different).

B4 you replace your gauges you should test them along with the senders per the FSM. The wires may not be connected correctly or at all thru the painless wiring or a fuse may be blown. You should make certain the senders are the correct Toyota senders.

So basically I need Toyota units with adapters to fit my Chevy block? I think mine are the same as yours aren’t they? So it must be my gauges are bad?
That's what I did. I'd say our temp sensors look different, but I can't definitely say yours is wrong. I'll have to find a picture, but I want to say the Chevy sensors looked similar.

I'd try momentarily grounding the lead to the sensor, the needle should move to high rather quickly, don't leave it there.
Or do it the right way with a 3.4W bulb as outlined in these threads:

My bet would be the sensors being nonToyota.

PS. Those were the two gauges that didn't work with my sbc (sensors wrong), the others worked.

You're Killin me, you get it fixed up?
Not yet been super busy at work hopefully I’ll be able to mess with it soon. I may just change out the whole gauge cluster all together. But I’ll still have to determine if the sensors are GM or Toyota 😅

Do you want to change the cluster? I wouldn't swap it over oil and water gauges. Testing by grounding is quick. I'd put money on the sensors being GM.
