Okay, I am about to re-key my drivers door (never had the key) and have started to take the panel off to gain access. My question is - can you fully slit open these doors? I don't want to take off all the weather stripping to see - it is in nice shape.

Also, I see a little rust inside, but can see a way of treating it without opening the door - more than the access panel provide. These are the older doors - all metal - 1970/71

I don't think I can, but maybe someone can confirm.

im curious.. how did you make out with Re-Keying... id like to have a door that locks from the outside too.. but dont have the key from the PO

Easy...I took the cylinder off, and took it in to a good locksmith, and 15 minutes later I had a working key and spares...it took longer to take it out, and put it back in the door :beer:

I understand you can still get locks from Toyota. When I last rekeyed mine they had the best price on the locks by far.
If you remove the access panel and the handle mechanism, you can gain access to the spring clip inside the door that keeps the lock cylinder in the door. Once you remove the clip the cylinder should just pop out.

The hardest part is reinstalling the new clip as it is very hard to acces the inside of the door. I've got very large hands, and vie managed to do it a few times. Sometimes a set of long nosed pliers can help.

I found a new cylinder to be cheaper... And that way the components will also be in good shape.
 
In another post a forum member writes on how he installed a lock on the right hand side door. In his write up he states to remove the window frame to gain the access required for the clip. Now this applied to the earlier FJ's (1971 and earlier) and so I don't know if that applies to the later ones that have inside door panels that pretty up the rig:)
