Hello—my 71 fj40 came without a fan shroud. I had another which I -thought- was from a 71 but when installed the fan would not clear it. Does anyone have a pic of the correct shroud for a 71? Or have an extra one they’d want to sell me, lol. Thanks!

The "F" shroud is very boxy where the 2F is formed with more rounded lines. Are you sure it's the wrong shroud or do you have
the wrong fan

No I think I have the wrong shroud. I’ll get a photo of it and post. Don’t know which year it’s from!

if you are still running the metal 4 blade fan, they will fail
change it out to the plastic fan

do you have the right fan?

If you have an "F" motor ( 1F ) , that shroud would be correct if everything is stock. If your 71 had a 2F transplant you should use the 2F shroud. The 2F usually used a fan clutch so the face of the fan moved and the shroud became shallower. The 2F fan will bolt to an early radiator support . Left /Right, Up/Down position of the motor didn't change so the center point position of either shrouds fan opening\
is the same. Specter does show two of the early fan shrouds, 1965-1968 and 1968-1974 but the fan is the same for both so the differences must be little. The fact that the 6 blade plastic became available in 73 leads me to believe that the fan diameter is the same.
The plastic fan was run with a spacer until the clutch was introduced

My 65 FJ45 has a early 2F. When the water pump failed I updated to a fan clutch and plastics fan. A later shroud was needed. The bolt holes didn't match the 65 radiator housing. That may have been the change in 68. :meh:

I pulled the radiator to give a better idea what is going on. I flipped the shroud so the flat side was up like some of the photos and the offset is even worse. I was able to check a late 60s fj45 that I have and it has the same shroud shown in some of the photos you all have sent me (1F motor). The one I _thought_ was for this motor does not have the bottom cutout (see yellow outline in pics) and binds in a few spots (green arrows). The fan is correct for this motor.

Crisis averted. In my pile of relatively organized cruiser parts, after looking like 5 times, I found the correct shroud. Still have no idea what year the other one is for—perhaps an older model? Anyway, thanks for all your suggestions.

Wow,
I’m wondering if the mystery shroud is from an FJ25? Found a link to a mud build with a photo!

Interesting. Never paid attention to the 25 shroud before, but it does look the same. And the fit with the other shroud was definitely off, and in the same way it would be off if had been designed for the taller F135 block.

that looks better, I would still get rid of that metal 4 blade fan. this is what can happen, luckily it didn't go thru the rad. This happened to a customer last Feb going down the highway at 55mph.
