The odometer on mine quit, haven't opened it to see why.

But I did find NOS speedometer available: 83110-60014.

Does anyone know what year that P/N would be for? Would it work for my '68? Is it MPH? PErhaps if different year I would just need to change the cable?

I cannot find info on it, just a pict, which looks correct.

I figured worst case, I could strip the odometer or gears for mine.

Thanks in advance.

Lots of good useful information here:
Also, there is a fellow here on MUD who is extremely knowledgeable and I believe that he routinely fixes odometers and instrument clusters @JVZii
Good luck.

@Green Bean thanks for the shout out.

@ron1 assuming you still have a 3 speed in your 40, your speedometer is an older style speedometer. Meaning the cable connection on the back is not the same (screw in vs push in) Also I am pretty sure 83110-60014 is a kilometers speedometer.

It will work but you will need some more parts to make it work. Also you will not measure distance and speed in MPH which is the way God intended distance and speed be captured.

Is it just your odometer that quit? Or the speedometer too. If both quit it may be a cable if the odometer quit then that is an easier fix.

it could be something as simple as the cable broke and just need the new cable

Yes, it is a 3 speed with the knurled knob screw in cable. Has new cable.

Speedo works fine, odo is inop. Traveling now, when I return I will take a closer look at the odo mechanism.

Likely your odometer is stuck on some sort of 9 combination. Like 31999 or 29999.

If one of the higher place wheels freezes up it will stick when it tries to rollover. If your tenths wheel turns but not the others that is your culprit

There are lots of videos and articles on how to fix this. If this is the case and you don't want to mess with it, I can fix it for you or send you a replacement odometer set that you can drop in.

Jack

Hey, thanks.

I do have the speedometer out on the staging bench in my workshop. When I return home later next week, I will take a look at the odo.

So, I may be contacting you.

Ron

Jack,

Tried to send a PM, but couldn't figure how to attach a photo.

Anyway, I need the angled gear for the odo, as you can see, the teeth are worn off. If you have one, what is the cost?

I am going to remove the odo and lube it, if not successful, I may send it to you.

Thanks.

Ron

From previous posts on this forum, I was able to disassemble, clean and lube the odometer. The wheels were quite difficult to remove from the shaft, lube was sticky.

Now just need the drive gear. Hopefully JVZii has some.

Ugh I suck. I will check tonight 😕

They look fine to me, and a lot better than what I have.

I would like to get at least one, I'm sure I can polish/smooth it. Worth a try to me.

How can I organise a couple

?

Are these the pict's you need? Couldn't rotate them in the insert, they are the correct orientation when taken.

Thanks again.

Ron

Well,

Received the gears, and my bad luck, they are too large.

Mine is 1.75 in. overall length and 0.25 in diameter.

Would you or anyone happen to have the smaller gear? Anyone interested in the larger gears?

That looks like it, and yes I disassembled the entire cluster to clean and lube all the moving odo parts.

So do you have one to sell?

Ron

Thanks JVZii, snow gone and removed from storage and odo works with the gear he supplied.

.1968 FJ40, three speed manual.

But, speedo and odo indications are 10% high. I would like to change to a 19 tooth driven gear. Searching this forum, I believe the P/N is 33403-69135.

Can anyone verify if this is correct, and a possible source?

Will stop at the Toyota dealer this week to see of they can order one.

I received the 33403-69135 gear. It is identical to the original 17 tooth gear, except the gear OD and tooth root is 0.090 inch larger in diameter.

I reduced the OD and cut the tooth root deeper. I reshaped the tooth profile to match the original gear. So far it works.

I figured the drive gear is steel, so worst case the nylon driven gear wears and I go back to the original.

Just an update for those interested.
