Hello,
New to FJ40s so I am sure I will be asking for a lot of help from this group.
The title of the vehicle matches the frame serial number F040 44660. Looking up the frame SN, this is a May 1966 frame. Why would the title be for a 1968? Does it really matter?
The SN for the engine is F226998. I cannot find a reference to tell me the year the engine was built. Is it the original engine? SOR reference chart starts in 1969.

I have had this vehicle for about a year. I have installed a power steering kit and it seems to work just fine.

I have also installed front and rear disc brakes with a very large booster cylinder. I was able to install disc brakes in the front by using the steering knuckle from a later year axle that had disc brakes originally. I did have to make some modification to the original steering knuckle spindle and hub. It took some work to get this done, but it seems to be a good solution. I do have one remaining problem. The aftermarket wheels hit the outside of the disc calipers and had to use some spacer washers behind the wheel to get some clearance. Intend to machine a spacer ring with the 6-wheel stud holes to avoid the stack of 1/4 inch washers around each stud. If interested in the details of this mod, please let me know and I will post how I did it.

Between the power steering pump and the brake booster there is no room for the original air intake filter and its housing. I have installed a 2-inch rubber elbow and a 3ft long section of vacuum hose and relocated the air intake on the left side of the engine just besides the battery. Originally, the intake was directly on top of the carburetor throat. Is there a problem with this very crude solution as far as engine performance? Am I better off installing an air filter directly on top of the carburetor? Any recommendations on what to use?

So after about a year of owning this "beast" as I call it, I was able to get it running and drove it for about 100 ft. Engine stalls and backfires when accelerating. Will be checking carburetor and timing next. Any ideas of what might be going on?

The water pump spindle where the pulley is mounted has a lot of play in it. is this fixable? What is a good recommendation on what to buy to replace?

Parts needed: gas tank, gast tank straps, front seats, all doors, rear quarter panels, hard top, front bumper, roll cage, seatbelts, front shocks, water pump, battery bracket, battery tray. Any offers?

Parts that I have to sell/trade: rebuilt front and rear axle from a later year FJ 40 that came with disc brakes (not sure the year), (the front axle does not have the steering knuckles). 4 drums and drum brake parts. I will also have a 3 speed trans once I install a 4 speed trans that came with the car.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site. You've come to the right place. We need pics. I can't help with the engine date, but others may chime in. A lot of early 40's were titled for the year they were sold at the dealer and not the production year. Your calipers are hitting the rivets on the inside of the rims. The Drum brake rim centers were riveted to the rim. In 76 when Toyota went to front disc brakes the center section of the rim were welded to provide clearance for the caliper. You need to get rid of the washers. New welded rims are still available from Toyota or buy a good used set. Most of your issues have been covered on this site. Either do an internet search and click on responses that reference this site or use this sites' search function here. Look in the FAQ's at the top of this section also. To sell or buy parts look in the classified section. Theres also a Clubhouse section where you might be able to find local enthusiasts. Carb clearances has been covered too. You can do wanted ads there too. There are very good vendors on this site also. We always like pictures. Typically ask and you'll get answers.

from your numbers the engine is in line with 66´ .... IMHO most likely original... there is a casting embossing on the drivers side on the block to pinpoint exactly.... but as i said it is most likely

Yes it was common for Toyota to sell several years old trucks in later years as new... so yours in built in 66 and is a 66 model truck sold and registered in 68´

if you go to the registry you'll see some trucks registered in correect years and some later years... that practice ended before the 70ś

There is a date code cast into the block, under the exhaust header, forward end of the engine. The fist digit is the year (6 = 66) then a 2 digit month and a 2 digit day. Motors were generally cast 2 to 3 months prior to assembly into the rig.

Picture if from an early 68, build date February 1968….. you can barely see the 7, followed by 1227….engine cast December 27, 1967.

Thanks everyone for the great input.

Here are some very rough sketches of the modification to allow the front axle of a 1966 FJ40 (1968 title) to be converted from drum brakes to disc brakes.

Had to use the steering knuckles from a FJ40 front axle that had disc brakes (not sure what year) to have the proper caliper mounting "ears".

Modifications included:

1. Enlarged holes on the flange that mounts the Steering Knuckle Spindle to the Steering Knuckle
2. Added a spacer between the thrust shoulder on the Steering Knuckle Spindle and the inner race of the inner tapered roller thrust bearing
3. Drilled and tapped a set of holes to allow the disc to be bolted to the Front Axle Hub. Stayed on the same bolt circle as the wheel mounting studs.
4. To be done: Machine a spacer (appx 1/4 thick) between the wheel lugs and wheel to avoid interference between the calipers and the inner face of the wheels.

I have not done any stress analysis on this modification (nor do I plan to and If I did I would use Solid Works). However, I believe there are no significant additional or higher stresses placed on any component, and I do not plan to race or highway drive this vehicle. Hope this helps.

Why didn't you just swap the disc brake axle in, instead of all that extra work?

I reached out to Cruiser Outfitters for technical help. By the way they are extremely helpful and professional. I mentioned above the spare front axle with disc brakes as being from a newer FJ 40. In fact it is from a FJ 60. The text in italics is the response when I asked this question to the Cruiser Tech: "On using the complete FJ60 axle. Only the long side of the axle housing is longer (~3") which when under the narrow 40 series creates a fitment issue with the differential and the leaf springs. It requires specialized spring hangers and parts and/or "outboarding" the leaf springs which is significantly more work."

The picture above shows the difference between the two axles inner shafts. The left is from my FJ 40 with a ball joint. The right is from the "donor" FJ 60 axle, which is much larger diameter and uses a Birfield type CV Joint

I was only asking because initially you mentioned you had an fj40 frt end.
