Hi new to the forum. Had my 1967 fj40 for about 20 years or more kept stock besides paint a tires just 31” BFG. Now with looking at lifting it will a new motor, roll cage, doing it more for around town and the trails. So was looking for any one who has done a spring over lift and what problems they ran into and shock size and possibly how tall the roof was sitting at when done. To see if it will fit in my garage or do it in there and be able to drive it out lol.

How tall is determined by lift in inches +thickness of the spring pack+thickness of the axle housing and spring perches. You're posting about 4" and a spring over. So you're looking at nearly 8" taller maybe even a bit more. With a hard top that's going to be a bit tippy on corners and off camber trail situations.

I’m down here in Mississippi look at doing no hard top too hot and would a spring under plus the 4 inch leafs be better for turns and was wanting 35” tires on it would I be able to run those do you think

Yes, either 4" lift and stay spring under, or no lift and go spring over. Personally, I'd suggest 3" lift and stay spring under, it will handle much better .

Match your lift to your intended use. Unless you need a lot of clearance underneath, staying spring under is the least work. Keeping the spring lift 3" and under will give you the best overall ride quality.

4" Skyjacker, SUA. 33"(measure out at 30.5") rubber. Extended shackles in the rear and an add a leaf on the rear spring packs. Bilstein shocks.

Just for reference.

I have the same lift springs and was thinking about adding the add leaf for a couple of inches more lift in the rear plus weight. How stiff is it and how much lift did you get? I have 33x10.50 now and want to do 35x10.50...Im running uncut fenders as well.

I actually pulled the add a leaf out from under my 40 last weekend, they were just a little too stiff for what I was wanting. I think they lifted the rear about a half inch or a little more.

Even with the 4plus carrier, a cooler full of beverages, and my rig loaded for whatever, I felt the rear was just a little too stiff.

OK thanks I just need a little extra up and am looking for the best way to do it bit I know I'm limited being a sua set up. Any ideas?

How long of shackles are you running?

Not the best pic but you can see the shackles,

I don't think an add a leaf is going to help you with that, your shackle angle looks a little wrong for skyjacker springs. Like your springs look too short eye to eye.

Well dang, that's what they are maybe I will check the numbers again. But yes I do see what your talking about. I would hate to buy the same thing twice.

Mine are 44" eye to eye, center to center

This is my 67 sprung over (and shackle reversed) on 37's with a wheelbase stretch and fj60 rear leafs.
It is much, much easier to just toss on some 3-4" lift springs. The spring over is great, but it is much more work (and $$$) to do it right.

I ran spring under for 20 years and it was great for everything I did. I've always wanted a spring over FJ40, so I did that when we rebuilt it. I like that too, but for different reasons.

if you ever got to NC, I would make you a killer deal on a well used, detroit EZ locked, sprung over 1967 rear 40 axle. I have it on the local board for $50. Honestly, I just hate to pitch it. Since most of my miles are street now, I just didn't want the auto locker.

Nice rig, mine looked that nice years ago and it's time to repaint everything again. I don't need to go so I don't wheel to hard I just would love to get an extra inch to put on 35 inch tires. I could fit them now I think but I really don't want to cut fenders..ideas?
