Currently in the middle of a 1966 FJ40 Restore. Looking to keep it mostly stock but looking for advice on rebuilding my axles, what parts/seals should I replace ect.
Is it a good idea to replace wheel bearings while I am at it? Who has the best rebuild kit? (SOR MANAFRE TOYOTA?) What is toyotas part number for it?

Ive spent time looking aroundat other rebuilds but they seem to be the latter years.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

John

not sure which axle you are refering (front or rear) but for the rear wheel seals and pinon seal i used toyota seals.. they were much better quality than the ones that were available at NAPA.. they were cheaper too. Not sure if anything like that is available for a 66 though

search for 'cruiser dan' here on mud. he might be your best bet for finding parts for such an early cruiser

I'd upgrade to later axles.....

the ball and claw just don't cut it.......

- Also I know swapping the axles out would be a great idea, i am keeping an eye out for some in my area.

Thanks

Upgrading axles would defeat the purpose of the restore...

I agree. A vehicle needs to be kept showroom stock to truly be a restoration.

I did not restore my '66 and the ball and claw axle has yet to give reason to be swapped. Mild to moderate off road use in a heavy 40, double the crawl gearing and 33's, never had a problem. Eventually a late disk brake axle will find its way under my truck, but for now it does just fine with what it has.
