1965 Fj 40 F engine. Where is my oil filter?

If you are looking for the air filter and can't find it maybe there IS no air filter. You may have the housing but no filter element. Thats how my first truck came to me.

Continuing in the air filter vein, it's highly possible that you have an oil-bath air cleaner. No paper filter element, just an inverted cone that 'filters' the incoming air through oil.

I really am a spaz. 1965 F engine OIL filter

Sorry, it is the oil filter I cannot locate. I understand that it is probably the canister type, but where on the F engine is it? i am afraid that someone has bypassed it because it was leaking or something and I have no filtration. Boy do I need a manual.

Oil filter SHOULD be on the driver's side of the motor. Look for a couple hoses coming off the side of the engine block roughly centered front to back just above the oil pan rail. If you follow those they should lead to a filter housing. On later F engines this housing is bolted to the intake manifold. I don't remember exactly where it is on the early F motors. I have removed at least one F motor that had the hose looped right back into the motor with NO oil filter whatsoever.

Good luck. Maybe post a picture or two of your engine compartment so folks can help point out whats what.

f oil filter

Most of the old f motors had filters mounted away from motor ,Relocated lines which are nice and easy to change filter.

The original style oil filter looked like a medium sized coffee can with a domed lid. It was located on the drivers side close to the manifold. the upgraded style that takes the newer style filter was usually u-bolted onto the manifold. if you take a look at my ROTW you can see what I'm talking about. If you are interested I have the original style and would be willing to sell it to you if you are going to be doing an original restore. I also have the oil bath air filter others were talking about. PM me if you're interested.

On my 66, which should be pretty darn close to yours, the oil filter is mounted to the intake manifold, right outboard and below the carb. It looks like a coffee can with a dome lid on it. One line going in, one going out.

Check out Andrew.Fletcher's 1F engine/parts thread/ad in the 55 classifieds for a photo--looks just like mine except I don't have a tandem brake/clutch

Its not there...

Great. No oil filter. I have no idea how long its been ran without it, i guess thats a testament to the F engine, it still runs quietly, no smoke, etc. i think it is probably bet to go with the updated version oil filter system, all agree? SOR says that parts for the canister system are getting hard to find. Anyone have one to sell? Thanks for the help.

Are you sure the engine is original to the truck? check the serial number on the engine. Behind the distributor, low on the block there is a flat spot with a number stamped into it. My '65 had a '74 "F-and-a-half" motor.

I bought a 67 years ago, same thing. no filter just the lines hooked up together, I was pulling the engine... so it didn't matter to me, but it had no filter.

They think they can't get the filters, they also forget the small drain plug they need to remove to drain the filter first so they have a mess when they remove the top bolt, the lower hose will fail if it gets twisted up a lot when they move it out of the filter can to get the oil out of the housing, it's also a bypass filter the oil just dumps back into the oil pan so it's not much of a filter anyway, so they figure it's like an old Volkswagen just change the oil more often, larry

If you don't care about originality I would definitely upgrade with the SOR oil filter kit. Changing the filter on the old canister setup is more of a mess than with new filters...

This is a picture of a used one of ebay. I did this back in the day to an early FJ40 as I had converted to a 2brl intake and header and needed to remount old canister filter. It is cleaner looking under the hood but not oem.. Takes a standard oil filter

Just an educated guess, your engine never had a filter. The F is a metric carbon copy of the Chevy Thriftmaster. Park your 1965 Land Cruiser next to a 1952 Bel Air and open the hoods…..

If it was bypassed, what kind of oil pressure were you running, the small hole in the oil return tube is basically an orifice that along with the regulator, maintains oil pressure.

This red F filter housing, is a spare, had it powder coated.
