It's funny because I recently learned a coworker of mine is an off-road fan, he has an '08 LR3, but he's looking to get rid of it as major electrical and mechanical problems have arisen recently.
I saw him in the parking lot and he asked me how I liked my Land Cruiser, I told him the obvious and we into talking about different rigs. I ended up handing him the keys and told him to take it down the road. He couldn't believe it was 18 years old. I went into explaining these aren't your average Toyota, blah blah.
I looked at his Rover and while I see the appeal that they have to some people, it was a rattly mess and this thing was ten years younger than my truck with 20k less miles. He did use it off-road, and he said it was awesome when the pavement ended, but the problems that have started and the fact that it sounds like it's falling apart take away the pleasure of driving.
I guess my point is, a reason why the 100s are such a pleasure to own is because they're built so well, and age so well, that it feels like you're sitting in a new vehicle everytime you drive, plus there's really no point in getting a new vehicle unless it's for economic reasons. To be honest, I really don't know how to out that feeling in words.
Yes these are fuel pigs and I can swear everytime I get on the skinny pedal I hear my fuel tank imploding, but it just comes with the territory. Paying extra for gas and parts is worth it to me, especially when I know what these trucks really are.
Nowadays it's plastic, plastic, and more plastic everywhere to cut costs. Water-based paints and clearcoats which are more environmentally friendly but are so thin and soft they scratch if you just look at them. You don't get the same craftsmanship nowadays as you did 20 years ago, and unfortunately, I don't believe the auto industry ever will.
They're not meant to be the most convenient, stylish, or powerful (that mentality of more power = a better car is prevalent in the auto industry)... Anyone who thinks these are Tahoe and Expedition competitors just don't know these trucks - aka certain magazines which have these competing against soccer mom SUVs (but that's another rant for another time).
